Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Great Falls broke a scoreless duel with an early second half goal and then added a late insurance tally Friday night to defeat The Evergreen State College, 2-0, in a quarterfinal round match of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Men's Soccer Championships being played at Willamalane Sports Complex.
The Argos (10-7-0 overall), who came into the tournament as the No. 6 seed, advance to a semifinal contest against No. 1 seed Rocky Mountain, which topped No. 8 seed Oregon Tech, 4-0, in an earlier quarterfinal.
For the Geoducks (9-2-4 overall), the No. 3 seed, the season comes to an untimely end.
Great Falls had the run of play through much of the first half, getting off 10 shots to just three for the Geoducks. The Argos were rewarded just 2:03 into the second half when Lewis Derrett scored from point-blank range following nice combination play with Sam Howard and Luis Macias.
As the Geoducks pushed forward to get the equalizier, Great Falls got the insurance tally from Mohamed Oulare at 82:16, his 18-yard strike coming at the end of a cross from Renan Zampieri.
While Great Falls got both of its goals in the second half, the shots were tied at three apiece between the two clubs. That gave the Argos a 13-6 final advantage in shots, though the Geoducks did get the only two corner kicks of the match.
Ben Stevenson came up with four saves in goal for the Geoducks while Marc Girones was called on to make just one save, that coming on a first half shot by
Issa Hassan.
Though the season comes to an end for the Geoducks, it was an outstanding one for this young team that started just three seniors.
