Box Score SALEM, Ore. -
Autumn Moorcroft scored a career-high 19 points and The Evergreen State College dominated the rebounding battle Saturday night in taking a 59-49 Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball win over the Corban Warriors at C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
In putting an end to a five-game losing streak, the Geoducks (4-18 overall, 4-13 CCC) shot 50 percent from the field. The Warriors couldn't find the bucket against Evergreen's defense, shooting just 27 percent overall, including making just 4 of their 25 three-point attempts. The Geoducks cleaned up on the board by a 51-27 margin.
Moorcroft had a particularly strong game for the Geoducks, shooting 8-for-10 from the field, including knocking down both of her three-point attempts. Prior to tonight's game the junior forward had made just one of her 10 attempts from beyond the arc for the entire season.
Evergreen's leading scorer and rebounder,
Gabi Fenumiai, had a strong game tallying 14 points, shooting 7-for-9 from the field, and 10 rebounds.
Uriah Thomas contributed 11 rebounds and eight points and
Lacey Morris added four assists for the Geoducks.
Jade Lowery scored 17 points, Julia Young had 13 and Payton Wilcox added 10 for the Warriors. Sadie Pilgeram, Corban's second leading scorer and one of the top three-point shooters in the conference, was 0-for-9 from beyond the arc and did not score a point. Pilgeram did, however, lead her team with seven rebounds and five assists.
There were a total of seven ties and five lead changes through the opening 20 minutes as the two teams battled on even terms, much as they had when the Geoducks beat the Warriors, 59-56, when they met on Jan. 8 in Olympia.
After the Geoducks opened up a six-point lead early in the third quarter, the Warriors put together a 9-0 run to take a 33-30 advantage with 5:37 left in the period. Moorcroft and
Victoria Elleby answered with back-to-back jumpers to put the visitors back on top, and they never again trailed. Their largest lead came at 54-43 on Fenumiai's layup with 1:30 to play.
Despite the victory, however, the Geoducks saw their playoff aspirations come to an end with Northwest University and College of Idaho grabbing the final two spots.
Evergreen returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, with a conference game at Walla Walla University.
