Victory Evades Evergreen as Corban Rallies

Jahpera McEachin
Box Score Hannah Shore scored a conventional three-point play with 0.4 seconds remaining as Corban defeated The Evergreen State College, 66-64, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball game played Friday night inside Costantino Recreation Center.

Evergreen's Cayla Jones hit a layin with eight seconds to play to give the hosts a 64-63 lead, and at the other end of the floor Cierra Moss blocked a potential game-winning layup by Corban's Jordan Rasberry. After the referees put 0.8 seconds on the clock, Shore used a screen to get to the basket and scored the go-ahead layin with Jordan Woodvine providing the inbounds pass. Shore was fouled on the play, hit the free throw, and then stole the ensuing inbounds pass to assure Corban (10-11 overall, CCC 6-8) the victory.

Woodvine led all players with 26 points on 10-for-13 shooting from the field, while Jahpera McEachin scored 13 and Jones 11 for the Geoducks (9-9, CCC 7-7).

The game was closely contested in the early going with Evergreen finally taking a 34-31 lead into the halftime break. The Geoducks came out strong in the third period and used a 9-0 run, capped by consecutive Moss layins, to open up a 48-36 lead with 2:57 to play in the quarter.

The Warriors whittled their deficit to seven points entering the final period and tied the game at 61-61 on a Maci Bozett jumper with 4:09 remaining. They took the lead at 63-61 when Woodvine finished a fast break with 3:19 on the clock.

The Geoducks got one back on the next possession when Jones hit one of two free throws, and they went ahead when the junior forward finished a strong drive to the basket inside the final 10 seconds. That led to Corban's game-winning shot just before the final buzzer.

Evergreen shot 41 percent overall (23-for-57) but lost the rebound battle by a large 50-30 margin. Corban was led in rebounding by Kendra Murphy with 13 boards.

Both teams play again tomorrow, Evergreen hosting Northwest Christian and Corban traveling to Kirkland to face Northwest University.
