Dell Hits Penalty, Varela Earns 9 Saves, in 1-1 Tie with Corban

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Brienna Dell (Sr., F) converted a penalty kick and Anna Varela (Jr., GK) made nine saves for The Evergreen State College in a 1-1 tie with Corban University during a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer game at Geoduck Pitch on Friday, Oct. 11.

"We placed another lesson under our belt today," Evergreen Head Women's Soccer Coach Kate Green said. "We had a few freshmen (Josie Harris and Macey Swensen) step up with their best game performances of the season. We are excited to move forward stronger and smarter."

The teams played a scoreless first half. Corban owned a 9-4 edge in total shots at the break, while Varela countered with four saves in the first 45 minutes for the Geoducks.

Dell provided the penalty kick at 52:13 after Peyton Rhyne ws fouled near the top of the penalty area. Dell sent the spot kick into the net for a 1-0 lead. It was her third goal of the season.

The Warriors tied the score just over seven minutes later when Carley Ganchenko intercepted a pass about 35 yards from the goal. Varela charged out to cut down Ganchenko's options, but the forward sent the ball over Varela and into the net.

Varela provided a big save for Evergreen just over 69 minutes into the game. She used her left arm to deflect a shot by Fatima Jimenez, causing the ball to go outside of the right post.

Corban goalie Ava Hayes registered a strong save with about three minutes left in the first half. Hayes stayed low on a shot from close range by Josie Harris (Fr., D) and earned a kick save. Hayes was credited with four saves during the game.

The Warriors gained a 22-8 margin in total shots and 10-5 advantage in shots on goal. Dell and Rhyne each took two shots for the Geoducks. Abril Dimas Camacho and Adilynn Brotnov each produced two shots for Corban. Both teams achieved two corner kicks.

Evergreen moved to 0-6-3 overall, 0-4-2 in the CCC. Corban ended the game at 5-5-2, 2-31 in the CCC. The Geoducks will remain at home to take on Bushnell University on Saturday, Oct. 12. Game time is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. PDT.
