Geoducks on the National Stage: NAIA Women’s Wrestling National Championship

JAMESTOWN, N.D. - In a remarkable inaugural season, the Evergreen State College Women's Wrestling Team showcased their mettle on the national stage at the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship in Jamestown, North Dakota. The Geoducks, brimming with excitement, faced off against top-tier wrestlers from NAIA schools across the country, capping off a rewarding journey.

The Geoducks' presence at the championship was historic, marking the program's first-ever appearance at the national level. Despite being in their nascent season, Evergreen's wrestlers displayed resilience, skill, and determination throughout the competition.

The standout performance of the championship came from Flor Parker-Borreo, affectionately known as Jasmine, who secured a remarkable 6th place All-American finish in the competitive 155 weight class. Jasmine faced challenges during the semifinal due to injuries but displayed incredible determination by persevering to contend for 3rd place. She took the lead in the match, holding a 6-1 advantage. However, due to a shoulder injury, she narrowly lost the match 6-8. She had to have a medical forfeit for 5th place due to this injury. It was a heavy decision for Jasmine as she was facing a favorable outcome against her opponent, but this decision will enable her to safely compete in the future!

Nizhoni Tallman, the first Native student on the team, put up a tremendous fight, losing to the third highest ranked wrestler in the nation 2 - 5. While this loss cost Tallman an All-American title, Tallman's exceptional performance speaks for itself.

Ellabelle Taylor, despite being a freshman this year, qualified for nationals herself! Taylor faced off against one of the championship finalists in an early dual.

Erica Grant, hailing from our local community, faced immense pressure due to expectations surrounding her performance. Despite this, she showcased remarkable leadership qualities. Grant couldn't help but feel disappointed that she didn't achieve All-American status, but she still has a bright future ahead! The rest of the team as well as the college community are very proud of her accomplishments this season.

The Geoducks collectively amassed 20.5 points, leaving an indelible mark in their debut appearance at the national championship. The achievement was a source of pride for the Evergreen community, reflecting the commitment and talent within the women's wrestling program.

Head Coach Fan Zhang expressed immense pride, stating, "We are Washington! What a proud way to represent!" The coach's words resonated with the spirit of the Geoducks, who, in their first season, showcased the strength and potential of Evergreen's wrestling program.

As the inaugural season culminated in this national championship experience, the Evergreen State College Women's Wrestling Team looks ahead with optimism and determination, laying the foundation for continued success and growth in the seasons to come.
