Evergreen Rains Goals on Northwest Christian

Box Score
OLYMPIA - Evergreen broke a two-match scoring drought on Saturday, defeating visiting Northwest Christian, 3-0, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer match played in wildly alternating weather conditions at Geoduck Pitch.

Evergreen improves to 4-8-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the conference while Northwest Christian slips to 5-9-0 overall and 1-5-0 in the CCC.

The teams battled through early light drizzle, occasional spots of sunshine, and a torrential wind-whipped downpour for portions of the second half. Players slipped on the water-logged grass during the second half, and minutes after the final whistle the threatening clouds gave way to sunshine.

The home team, which had lost a pair of agonizing 1-0 decisions in its two most recent games, was rewarded twice for its first half dominance. Evergreen got on the board just 6:48 into the match on Delaney Smith's third goal of the season. Amy Bromley found Smith unmarked at the top of the penalty area and Smith made no mistake, ripping a shot past NCU keeper Kristin Fulbright and into the left side of the net

The Geoducks continued their siege on the Beacons goal and notched their second goal at 39:04 when a mis-hit NCU clearance came to the feet of Rayna Rain, who hammered home her second goal of the season from about eight yards in front of goal.

Evergreen's early dominance could have resulted in as many as five goals except for the outstanding goalkeeping of Fulbright. The NCU keeper tipped an early shot by Smith and a last-second attempt by Emily Gordon over the crossbar. Later, a header by Evergreen's Kenzie Phillips was cleared off of the line by the Beacons defense.

On the other end, Northwest Christian had only one really good chance in the first half, but Evergreen keeper Kyla Kitts charged off of her line and forced Maddi Bartholomew to shoot just high and wide.

The Geoducks scored the final goal four minutes into the second half when the Smith and Bromley combination hooked up for the second time in the game. This time it was Smith who put a through ball into Bromley's path, and she hit it back across the face of goal and into the net.

Northwest Christian's best offensive production started with the heavy rain. After being out-shot 13-2 in the opening half, the Beacons managed five shots in the second 45-minute period. Still, Evergreen finished the game with big advantages in shots (20-7) and corner kicks (9-2).

Kyla Kitts earned the shutout with four saves for the Geoducks, while Fulbright had seven saves for the Beacons.

"I was impressed and pleased with the ladies and the effort they put in," Evergreen head coach Adam Fenster said. "We took care of our chances today."

Evergreen returns to action at 3 p.m. Thursday when it faces Eastern Oregon in La Grande.
