Box Score LA GRANDE, Ore. - Despite a strong second half showing, The Evergreen State College couldn't overcome a first half Eastern Oregon goal as the host Mountaineers grabbed a 1-0 win in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer match played Thursday afternoon on the EOU Soccer Field.
In winning their first conference match this season, the Mountaineers improved to 1-2-3 in the CCC and 3-5-4 overall. Evergreen is now 2-5-0 in conference action and 4-9-0 overall.
The lone goal of the match came from Sydney Nelson in the 33rd minute. Nelson's initial effort was saved by
Kyla Kitts, but she was able to get the rebound and finish for her third tally of the season.
Eastern Oregon took 11 shots and put four on frame in the opening 45 minutes of the contest, but in the second half Evergreen was able to keep the hosts from getting a shot until less than four minutes showed on the clock. EOU ended up 13 total shots, including four on goal. In the second half alone Eastern Oregon was whistled for 10 of its 11 fouls.
While not having the same number of shots as EOU in the first half - five - the Geoducks put four of their shots on goal. They had four additional shots in the second half, though none were on goal.
Kenzie Phillips was an offensive standout for Evergreen, taking eight of the team's nine attempts.
Rayna Rains had the other shot, that coming in the final period.
Kyla Kitts came up with three saves for the Geoducks while Jessica Parker had three saves for Eastern Oregon. One of Parker's teammates prevented a sixth-minute goal by Phillips, clearing the ball off of the line.
Evergreen returns to Cascade Collegiate Conference action at noon Saturday when it plays College of Idaho in Caldwell.
