Overtime Goal Nets Eagles an OT Victory

Box Score

OLYMPIA – After 90 minutes of scoreless action, Acacia Johnson scored just 46 seconds into overtime as the visiting Northwest University Eagles took a 1-0 victory over The Evergreen State College in a Saturday afternoon Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer match played at Geoduck Pitch.

Johnson, who led all players with seven shots during the game, took a pass from Kylie Garrison about six yards in front of the goal and whipped her shot past Evergreen goalkeeper Kyla Kitts, who had little chance to make the stop.

Northwest remains unbeaten in three CCC matches and improves to 5-5-1 overall, while Evergreen sees its record fall to 1-2 in the conference and 3-7 overall.

The Eagles had most of the play in the early going, but Evergreen battled back in the opening 45 minutes and the first half showed fairly even statistics with the visitors taking six shots compared to four for the Geoducks.

The second half was a different matter, however, as Northwest turned up the offensive pressure with 13 shots compared to just two for the hosts. The Evergreen defense, marshalled by center back Jasmine Berlin, remained resolute under the pressure. Kitts came up with a marvelous save with about 21 minutes remaining, smothering a shot by Kylie Garrison at point-blank range.

With overtime less than one minute old, the Eagles' Garrison and Johnson combined for the game-winning goal.

The Geoducks return to action at 4 p.m. next Thursday, Oct. 9, when they host conference opponent Corban University.
