Men's Hoops: Corban, NCU Come to Olympia for Conference Contests

COMING UP: Evergreen wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule last week and looks ahead to the 16 Cascade Collegiate Conference games remaining on its 2014-15 regular season slate. The Geoducks, 3-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference, host the Corban Warriors at 7:30 p.m. Friday and the Northwest Christian Beacons at 5 p.m. on Saturday in the final two games prior to the Christmas and New Year's holidays. It should be noted that the Saturday start times against Northwest Christian have been moved up 2 1/2 hours from normal start times to accommodate holiday travel for personnel working the Evergreen women's and men's games.

FOLLOW THE GEODUCKS: Fans unable to attend Evergreen home games can still follow their favorite team via video feed and live stats. Access both at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/evergreen/.

TICKET PRICES: Ticket prices remain the same for Friday's game against Corban - free for Evergreen students with ID card, $6 for adults, and $3 for military, seniors and children-under-12. Admission is free for Saturday's contests.

WE'RE NO. 1: Evergreen continues to lead all of NAIA Division II men's basketball in turnover margin with a +7.11, an unusual stat given the team's penchant for pushing the tempo as evidenced by the team's 82.4 points-per-game scoring clip. The Geoducks turn the ball over 10.3 times per game compared to 17.4 for their opponents. The Geoducks are ranked in the top 20 nationally in several other categories - 12th in three-point field goals made per game (9.3), 13th in free throw percentage (.750), and 14th in assists-to-turnover ratio (1.3). Individually, junior forward Alix Hernandez ranks 27th in defensive rebounds per game (5.9).

ABOUT THE GEODUCKS: As mentioned earlier, Evergreen comes into the two weekend games with a 3-6 overall record, including a split of games last weekend against NCAA Division III Northwest Conference opponents. Evergreen handled Pacific Lutheran, 75-65, last Wednesday night in Parkland, but then dropped an 81-71 home decision to the Pacific Boxers on Friday night. Senior guard Jordan Dam continues to lead the team in scoring average at 16.0 points per game, followed by senior forward/center Kortney Darby at 14.0, Alix Hernandez at 13.2 and junior point guard Frankie Johnson at 12.1. Marquise Doss, a senior guard, averages 6.6 points per game and joins the previous four in a quintet that has started all nine Evergreen games. Hernandez, at 6-feet, 1-inch, has led the Geoducks in rebounding in every game and averages 7.7 to pace the team in that category. Dam is shooting 54 percent overall and 41 percent from beyond the three-point line, and Johnson contributes 3.0 assists per game for the Geoducks.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS: Corban is 6-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference under the direction of second-year head coach Steve Masten. That overall win total is just two shy of last season's eight victories (Corban was 8-20 in 2013-14). Cyrus Ward, a 6-6 junior forward from nearby Gig Harbor, Wash., leads the Warriors with 17.3 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. He is shooting nearly 60 percent from the field and 88 percent at the free throw line. Jordan Carter, an all-conference senior guard, averages 15.6 points per game while sophomore guard Toby Roth and freshman guard AJ Monterossi both contribute 10.6 points per contest. Roth runs the show from the point and averages nearly 4.0 assists per game. As a team Corban shoots 49 percent from the field and through its nine games averages better than 12 points and 11 rebounds more than its opponents. Corban split with Evergreen last season, winning 75-71 at home and losing 81-66 in Olympia.

ABOUT THE BEACONS: Head coach Luke Jackson, the former professional and University of Oregon standout, is building a powerhouse in Eugene, Ore. The Beacons, who play Friday night at Northwest University, are 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the CCC. They are 6-0 at home and 1-2 on the road. Northwest Christian averages better than 15 points and two rebounds per game more than its opponents, is shooting nearly 52 percent overall and 43 percent from three-point range, and averages more than 10 three-point field goal makes per contest. Javonte Byrd, a 6-4 junior guard, averages 15.0 points to lead his team and is shooting 62 percent overall and 53 percent from beyond the arc. Austin Kempter, a 6-9 junior forward, averages 13.8 points and 5.7 rebounds while shooting 57 percent, and 6-3 senior guard/forward Travis Pacos adds 12.0 points and 64 percent marksmanship to the NCU cause. Senior Devyn Inglehart contributes an average of 5.2 assists from his point guard position. Northwest Christian swept a pair of games from Evergreen in 2013-14, winning 68-55 in Eugene and 78-73 in Olympia.

EVERGREEN 75, PLU 65: Jordan Dam scored 16 points and Landon Rushton added 15 off the bench last Wednesday night to lead the Geoducks to a 75-65 non-conference win over the host Pacific Lutheran Lutes at The Names Family Court. Frankie Johnson, Kortney Darby and Alix Hernandez all scored 10 points in the victory. The Geoducks, who have been outrebounded by an average of 12 per game, won the battle of the boards against the taller Lutes, 41-33, with Hernandez taking down eight and Darby grabbing seven. Evergreen shot 42 percent (25-for-59) from the field, with 27 of their shots coming from beyond the three-point line. They knocked down nine of those, including a 3-for-4 effort from Rushton. PLU led 8-4 through nearly eight minutes of action before Evergreen finally got untracked. Hernandez and Johnson scored layups and Rushton drained his first triple of the night, all within one minute, to put Evergreen on top, 11-8, with 11:19 to play in the half. The Geoducks never again trailed.

PACIFIC 81, EVERGREEN 71: Alix Hernandez tallied 21 points and seven rebounds to lead Evergreen, which saw too much of Mitch Wettig and Danny Brakebush in an 81-71 defeat to the visiting Pacific Boxers last Friday in CRC Gymnasium. Wettig was a major force near the basket, scoring most of his 20 points near the rim while also pulling down a game-best 15 rebounds. Brakebush scored in a variety of ways, hitting four of his three-point shots and also driving to the basket frequently on the way to a 26-point performance. Riley Grandinetti added 16 points for the Boxers, who finished the game shooting 53 percent (27-for-51), including an impressive 50 percent (10-for-20) from beyond the arc. More impressively, the Boxers did a number on the glass, pulling down 37 rebounds to just 18 for the hosts. Jordan Dam added 15 points and Frankie Johnson and Jarrick Mitchell both scored 10 for the Geoducks, who were within four points at 58-54 with 7:40 remaining before the Boxers pulled away. Evergreen shot a solid 51 percent overall (26-for-51) but struggled from beyond the three-point line, making just 25 percent (4-for-16). Interestingly, the Geoducks maintained their nation-leading turnover margin almost exactly, giving the ball away just 10 times while the Boxers committed 18 turnovers.
