Frankie Johnson scorched the nets for a career-high 28 points Friday night but Eastern Oregon spoiled the evening for Evergreen by taking a 90-84 victory in the Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball opener for both squads at Quinn Coliseum.
Evergreen is now 2-4 for the season while Eastern Oregon improves its record to 7-2.
Johnson hit five of his eight attempts from beyond the three-point line and was 5-for-6 from the charity stripe on his way to the 28-point night.
Jordan Dam added 15 points and seven rebounds, while
Alix Hernandez finished with 11 points and eight boards. The team's leading scorer,
Kortney Darby, had a tough shooting night from the field and finished with just five points, 14 below his season average.
Evergreen came out on fire, building its largest lead of the game at 18-6 on Johnson's three-point basket about 6 1/2 minutes into the opening half, before Eastern Oregon responded with its own 18-6 run to tie the game at 24-24.
Donald Terry nailed a triple to put the Geoducks on top 27-24, but once the Mountaineers took a 29-27 lead on a trey by Bryan McGriff, they never again trailed.
Eastern Oregon led by as many as 21 points early in the second half and maintained a double-digit lead until the final minute when the Geoducks got their deficit to nine points with 50 seconds remaining. They got to the final six-point margin with the game's final basket by Dam.
McGriff and De'Sean Mattox had nearly similar nights for EOU with 24 points apiece, while McGriff's 10 rebounds were one more than Mattox. Michael Crane also had a big night with 20 points and seven rebounds.
Evergreen shot 40 percent (31-for-77) for the night, including 31 percent (9-for-29) from long range. Eastern Oregon, meanwhile, shot a crisp 64 percent (32-for-50) overall and 50 percent (7-for-14) from three-point land.
The Geoducks return to action at 7:30 p.m. Saturday when they face conference favorite and defending champion College of Idaho in Caldwell.
