ABOUT THE GEODUCKS: While Evergreen enters the weekend at the bottom of the conference standings, it continues to be ranked among the top 25 in NAIA Division II men's hoops in several categories. After leading the nation in turnover margin up to this point, the team has slipped to No. 2 with 6.571 fewer turnovers than its opponents. Evergreen ranks No. 18 in both three-point field goals per game (8.7) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3) and is No. 22 in free throw percentage (.729). That free throw accuracy is best among conference opponents, though the Geoducks have attempted 99 fewer free throws than all but three CCC teams. Not surprisingly, the Geoducks are in the negative in both scoring margin (6.9 per game) and rebounding (11.2 per game). Senior forward
Jordan Dam averages a team-best 14.1 points, followed by
Kortney Darby at 13.6,
Alix Hernandez at 12.1 and
Frankie Johnson at 11.6. Hernandez is the team leader with 6.8 rebounds and 1.6 steals per contest. Evergreen hopes to break out of a six-game losing streak this weekend but that will be difficult against a pair of nationally ranked opponents.
Â
ABOUT CONCORDIA: The Cavaliers, ranked No. 14 in the NAIA Division II Top 25 poll, are currently tied with Warner Pacific for second place in the conference at 5-2, one-half game behind Southern Oregon at 6-2. The Cavaliers score 79.6 points and allow 70.1 and have a positive 6.3 rebound margin against their opponents. Additionally, they rank No. 1 in the conference in steals per game (10.6) and are third in turnover margin (+4.1). Senior guard Tyler Velasquez leads the team with 15.9 points per game and is second in the conference in assists (5.4) and first in steals (3.2) per game. Joining Velasquez with double-figure scoring averages are seniors Anthony Holton (12.0), Thomas Pierce (11.8) and Justyn Searle (11.2). Searle leads his team with averages of 7.5 rebounds and 1.8 blocks. A trio of Concordia players shoot better than 54 percent from the field.
Â
LAST YEAR: Evergreen and Concordia beat each other on their home courts last season, the Geoducks by a 94-93 margin and the Cavs by a 103-92 count.
Â
ABOUT WARNER PACIFIC: The Knights, who start the weekend with a Friday night game at Northwest University, moved from "receiving votes" to No. 21 in this week's national poll. They top the conference in scoring margin, averaging 77.5 while giving up 61.9 per game, and also lead the league in field goal percentage defense by 29 points, limiting opponents to .375 shooting. They are No. 2 in steals per game (9.9) and turnover margin (+5.58). Interestingly, Warner Pacific is a negative 1.8 in rebounds per game, making it the only CCC team besides Evergreen with a minus number in that category. Senior Doug Thomas is among the league leaders with 17.2 points per game, followed by senior Coletun Tarr at 14.9. Senior Michael Hall paces his team with 7.1 rebounds per game and 59 percent shooting, while senior guard Josh Black averages 5.9 assists per contest.
Â
RECENT RESULTS: Warner Pacific has won the past nine games against Evergreen, including 79-70 in Portland and 87-71 in Olympia during the 2013-14 season.
Â
LAST WEEK: The Geoducks dropped fell to Southern Oregon, 105-72, on Friday and to Oregon Tech, 85-57, on Saturday.
