Evergreen Good Early, Northwest Better Late

Alix Hernandez tallied 11 points and nine rebounds for the Geoducks.
Box Score KIRKLAND - The Evergreen State College played well early but the host Northwest Eagles were better late in taking a 68-57 Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory on Saturday night.

In ending a six-game losing streak, the Eagles improved to 13-11 overall and 3-9 in the conference. Evergreen lost for the 11th straight time and is now 3-16 overall and 0-12 in the CCC.

For the third straight game, Evergreen couldn't figure out how to shut down Northwest shooting guard Tomas Ogbaslassie. The lanky 6-5 shooting guard was 5-for-7 from three-point range on the way to a game-high 20 points. Ogbaslassie averaged 20.5 points in two previous Northwest victories over Evergreen.

Ogbaslassie was not a factor early on, even when the hosts built a 9-4 lead. Trailing by five, the visiting Geoducks responded by scoring 18 unanswered points over a 10-minute period. Jordan Dam tallied five points and Brock Otis added four as a number of Evergreen players got into the act. At the same time, the Eagles turned the ball over six times and missed nine shots.

Dak Shagren ended Northwest's futility with a layup with 6:46 on the clock, and then over the final 4:48 of the half the Eagles went on an 11-2 run to cut Evergreen's lead to 29-25 at the intermission. Ogbaslassie nailed a pair of threes and a free throw during the late run.

With the score tied 32-32 a couple of minutes into the second half the Eagles went on a 10-0 run, highlighted by three-pointers from Shagren and Thomas Jordan, to take a 42-32 lead. Evergreen whittled away at its deficit and pulled within one point, 46-45, on a David Weatherspoon tip in at the 9:03 mark.

Later, Evergreen was within five points after an Alix Hernandez jumper with 1:12 to play, but a pair of Jordan free throws followed by an Ogbaslassie three-pointer decided things.

Joining Ogbaslassie in double figures for the Eagles were CJ Carter with 14 points, Jordan with 13 and Shagren with 10. Northwest made 11 three-pointers while shooting 42 percent from beyond the arc. They also enjoyed a 42-28 advantage on the boards, led by Carter with a game-high 12.

Evergreen got 13 points each from Dam and Otis and 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds from Hernandez. The Geoducks shot just 39 percent overall (22-for-57), including 6-for-24 from beyond the three-point line. As they have all season, the Geoducks took care of the ball, committing just eight turnovers compared to 14 for the Eagles.

Next up for the Geoducks are the Oregon Tech Owls, who visit CRC Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. next Friday for another Cascade Collegiate Conference clash.
