Women's Soccer: Two Wins Needed for Playoff Berth

Emily Gordon and the Geoducks need two wins to make the playoffs.
COMING UP: With a conference women's soccer postseason tournament berth on the line, The Evergreen State College (2-11-0 overall, 2-7-0, 6 points CCC) hosts Northwest Christian (2-12-1, 1-8-0, 3 points CCC) at 2 p.m. Friday and Corban (5-10-1, 2-6-1, 7 points) at 2 p.m. Saturday in conference matches.

WHAT'S AT STAKE: For Evergreen, anything short of two victories keeps the team out of the eight-team conference postseason tournament. A win and a tie this weekend would give the Geoducks 10 points in the standings, sufficient for a tie for the final playoff spot, but they would come up short based on a conference tiebreaker rule pertaining to fewer goals allowed in conference games. Through nine matches Evergreen has allowed 27 goals, the most of any team in the conference.

ABOUT THE GEODUCKS: While Evergreen has lost each of its last four matches since their most recent win on Oct. 10, they have scored a goal in three of those defeats. The Geoducks struggled early this campaign to score goals and while their season total is still only eight after 13 matches, they have experienced some success in recent games. Junior midfielder Molly Celler and sophomore forward Stephanie Yoder are tied for the team lead with two goals apiece. Yoder, who has missed the last four matches because of injury, could play this weekend. Junior goalkeeper Alison Mackey has started four of the past five matches and has a 1.99 goals against average and 45 saves.

ABOUT NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN: The Beacons bring up the rear of the conference standings with three points on a 1-8-0 record, and for the season they are winless in six away matches. Melyssa Weber leads the team with three goals this season, which has bumped her career total to 11, fourth on NCU's all-time list. Goalkeeper Kristin Fulbright has compiled a 1.58 goals against average this season. Evergreen has had Northwest Christian's number the past two years, scoring 3-0 wins each season. The last time NCU beat Evergreen came in 2012 and ended 3-2 in double overtime.

ABOUT CORBAN: The Warriors would have to be the most underachieving team in the league, at least if you go by the CCC preseason coaches' poll that had Corban finishing second behind Northwest University. Instead, the Warriors, like Evergreen, are fighting for their playoff lives. With seven points on a 2-6-1 record they occupy ninth place, one point and one position ahead of Evergreen. Prior to playing the Geoducks on Saturday they face sixth-place Northwest University, which has wrapped up a CCC tournament berth, on Friday afternoon. There are several scenarios that will allow Corban to get into the tournament but the easiest route would be a victory over Evergreen. Lexi McQueary and Sadee Kallis are tied for the team lead with four goals, while Sheyenne Brusven has compiled a 1.40 goals against average and 92 saves while playing every minute in goal. Corban has defeated Evergreen six straight times, including a 1-0 win here last October. The most recent Evergreen victory in the series came by a 1-0 score on Oct. 17, 2008, with Kate Green scoring the game's only goal.
