Women's Soccer: Geoducks Hoping for Fast Starts

Jasmine Berlin (12) and the Geoducks hope to get off to faster starts.
COMING UP: The Evergreen State College (1-6-0 overall, 1-2-0 CCC) will host Southern Oregon (4-7-2 overall, 3-3-0 CCC) on Friday and Oregon Tech (5-5-1 overall, 3-3-0 CCC) on Saturday in Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer matches. Kickoff for both matches is schedule for 2 p.m.

FOLLOW THE GEODUCKS: If you are unable to be at the Friday and Saturday matches you can still follow the actions via live stats - http://portal.stretchinternet.com/evergreen/#.

ABOUT THE GEODUCKS: While the Geoducks have been outscored 17 goals to four goals this season, they are starting to find their way on offense in recent games. The team was shut out four straight matches to start the season but since then has scored four goals in three matches. Sophomore forward Stephanie Yoder has scored two goals, one from the run of play and the other from the penalty spot. The others goals have come from freshman forward Ava Mickola and sophomore midfielder Haleigh Ryneski. Two of the team's four goals have come from the penalty spot.

FASTER STARTS: The Geoducks seek to improve their first-half play as they have been outscored, 12-1, in the first half of their games; the second-half scoring differential is much closer at 5-3 in favor of Evergreen's opponents.

ABOUT SOUTHERN OREGON: After starting out with a 1-6-2 record, the Raiders have won three of their last four games. Though she has started only six of her team's 13 games, Megan Kapp is the team's leading goal scorer with five. Allyson Ward is next in scoring with four goals. Makena Totushek leads the team with three assists. Kylie Moltzen has played all but one half in goal for the Raiders and has collected 55 saves to go with a 1.29 goals against average. The Raiders, like Evergreen, seem to play better in the second half of matches as they have outscored their opponents, 17-6, in the closing half of their games. Southern Oregon beat Evergreen, 4-1, in their 2014 games in Ashland, Ore.

ABOUT OREGON TECH: Since losing three straight road games during the middle of September, the Owls have won three of their past four matches, including a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Warner Pacific last weekend. Oregon Tech, which has scored 14 goals and allowed 19 in its 11 matches, has a 2-4-1 road record this season. Tarryn Miyamura is the leading scorer with four goals and two assists for 10 points, Chrishtianna Newell has scored three goals, and Cassidy Gosvener leads the Owls with three assists. The goalkeeping duty is fairly evenly split between Emma Niskanen with a 1.30 goals against average and 26 saves and Katie Vames with a 1.93 goals against average and 24 saves. Last season, Evergreen defeated OIT by a 2-1 score in Klamath Falls, Ore.

GEODUCKS FALL TO EAGLES: Stephanie Yoder scored a second half penalty kick to cut Evergreen's deficit to 2-1 but the visiting Trinity Lutheran Eagles got an insurance goal late in the game to take a 3-1 victory over the Geoducks in a non-conference match played last Thursday at Geoduck Pitch. The match was one of contrasts as Trinity Lutheran controlled play in the opening 45 minutes before the Geoducks took over in the final half. Evergreen's second half dominance paid off at 60:29 when Yoder was tripped in the box after getting in behind the defense and then scored from the penalty spot. In the end the Eagles had a 20-13 advantage in shots and a 2-1 edge in corner kicks. Kayla Baskett finished with six saves for the Geoducks.
