Danny Powell and
Alix Hernandez both had huge games with double-double performances Friday night as The Evergreen State College made it two Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball victories in as many tries with a 97-84 victory over the Multnomah Lions at Jim Skagen Court.
With tonight's victory added to a conference-opening win over Northwest on Tuesday night, the Geoducks (4-4 overall, 2-0 CCC) won back-to-back conference games for the first time since triumphs over Corban and Northwest Christian in December 2010.
Powell had a monster game for the Geoducks with 36 points and 12 rebounds, while Hernandez scored 21 points and cleaned up 16 boards.
Brock Otis and
Taylor Drey also scored in double figures for Evergreen, Otis going for 21 and Drey finishing with 11 off of the bench.
Multnomah's leading scorer, Blake Updike, kept it going with 30 points. Jordan Paris with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Ezekiel Martin added 13 points and 11 boards for the Lions.
Though the Geoducks led by 12 points just less than seven minutes into the game, the Lions actually held a 47-42 lead at the half after making the most of a 13-0 scoring spurt over a 2 1/2-minute period in the middle of the half.Â
Evergreen tied the score early in the second half but soon fell behind by nine points, 65-56, with 14:46 to play. It still trailed 72-64 until tying the game at 73-73 with 9:00 left on a three-point basket by
Landon Rushton. Following an offensive foul by Updike, Evergreen grabbed the lead for good on a big three-pointer by Drey, the assist going to Rushton.
With Powell scoring six consecutive points, four at the free throw line, the Geoducks surged ahead 90-77, and they maintained their double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
Powell was 11-for-16 from the field, 5-for-9 from three-point range and also knocked down all nine of his free throws in scoring his game-high 36 points.
The Geoducks, who turned the ball over just eight times, shot 43 percent from the floor (32-for-75) but knocked down 15 of their 38 shots from beyond the arc. Multnomah (3-6, 0-2), which came into the week averaging more than 15 three-point makes per game, was just 9-for-28 from long range.
Evergreen seeks its third straight conference win on Saturday night when it faces Warner Pacific.Â
