Men's Hoops: Geoducks Close With Two Home Games

Jordan Rawls is one of five seniors who will be playing their final games for Evergreen.
COMING UP: The Evergreen State College (4-19 overall, CCC 1-15) closes the 2014-15 men's basketball season by hosting No. 3-ranked College of Idaho (24-4, 13-3) on Friday and Eastern Oregon (12-14, 4-12) on Saturday in a pair of Cascade Collegiate Conference contests. Both games are slated to start at 7:30 p.m.

SENIOR DAY: Saturday's game will likely start 10 or more minutes late to accommodate Senior Day festivities honoring senior members of the Evergreen women's and men's teams. The activity will start immediately following the conclusion of the women's game. Senior members of the men's team are Jordan Dam, Jordan Rawls, Marquise Doss, Kortney Darby and David Weatherspoon.

FOLLOW THE GEODUCKS: Fans unable to attend Evergreen home games can still follow their favorite team via live stats and pay-per-view video feed. Access both at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/evergreen/. John Hammargren is the play-by-play announcer on the video stream.

ABOUT THE GEODUCKS: Evergreen is ranked No. 3 among NAIA Division II programs in turnover margin with 4.78. In rounded numbers the Geoducks turn the ball over 10.7 times per game compared to 15.4 for their opponents. They rank No. 12 nationally in three-point field goals made per game with 8.8 and No. 16 in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.3. Senior Jordan Dam is the team scoring leader with 15.0 points per game, followed by junior Alix Hernandez at 12.0 and junior Brock Otis at 11.2. Senior Kortney Darby was averaging 13.6 points per game when his season came to an end because of a knee injury. Hernandez leads the team with 6.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per contest. Four Geoducks have started all 23 games this season - Dam, Hernandez, Marquise Doss and Frankie Johnson. Otis has started 14 games and Darby started nine. As a team the Geoducks average 74.4 points while allowing 84.0 per game, and they are negative 12.5 rebounds per contest.

ABOUT COLLEGE OF IDAHO: The Coyotes will enter CRC Gymnasium with a 24-4 overall record, a 13-3 CCC mark and first place standing in the conference, and the No. 3 national ranking. C of I earned the No. 7 ranking in the NAIA Division II preseason poll and since then has been ranked as high as No. 2 and no lower than No. 5. Following last weekend's sweep of Northwest Christian and Corban, College of Idaho has won 31 consecutive home games. A win in either of their final two regular season games - they play at Northwest University on Saturday night - would give them back-to-back Cascade Collegiate Conference titles for the first time ever. College of Idaho averages a league-leading 80.6 points per game while allowing 69.8, and it outrebounds opponents by an average of 10.2 per game. It ranks first in the league in assists (18.8 per game) and defensive rebounding percentage (.745) and second in blocks (5.5 per game) and offensive rebounding percentage (.389). This deep and talented team is led by senior guard Demetrius Perkins and by 6-11 senior center Marko Kovacevic. Perkins averages 14.4 points and 3.6 assists per game while also shooting .806 (116-for-144) from the free throw line, while Kovacevic averages 11.7 points and 7.1 rebounds while shooting .556 from the field. Senior guard Josh Wilson averages 11.3 points, 6.9 rebounds and 4.0 assists, sophomore forward Joey Nebeker scores 10.5 points per game, and 7-1 senior center Joe Vaz tallies 6.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game while shooting a league-leading .663 from the field. Senior guard Jordan O'Byrne shoot .436 from beyond the three-point line.

THE LAST TIME: Evergreen led at the half but couldn't hold off a strong second half performance by the Coyotes, who pulled out a 103-88 victory on Dec. 6 in Caldwell, Idaho. Frankie Johnson scored a game-high 23 points for the Geoducks, followed by Jordan Dam and and Alix Hernandez with 11 points and Marquise Doss with 10. Joey Nebeker tallied 21 points and 11 rebounds and Josh Wilson added 12 points and 14 rebounds for the winners.

ABOUT EASTERN OREGON: Despite a 4-12 record and ninth-place standing in the CCC, the Mountaineers feature two of the league's top scorers in junior forward Bryan McGriff and senior guard De'Sean Mattox. McGriff averages 21.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game (both second best in the CCC) while Mattox tallies 19.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. Mattox likes to get to the rim and gets to the foul line as a result, shooting 117-for-151, or .775 percent. Junior guard Case Rada averages 13.2 points and has .826 accuracy at the foul line, while junior forward Kalvin Johanson averages 2.5 blocks per contest. Eastern Oregon is a high-scoring team, averaging 78.9 points per game while allowing 76.5, and it averages 6.4 more rebounds per game than its foes. Additionally, EOU leads all CCC teams with 5.5 blocks per game.

THE LAST TIME: Frankie Johnson scorched the nets for what was then a career-high 28 points but host Eastern Oregon spoiled the evening for Evergreen by taking a 90-84 victory in the conference opener on Dec. 5. Johnson hit five of his eight attempts from beyond the three-point line and was 5-for-6 from the charity stripe on his way to the 28-point night. Jordan Dam added 15 points and seven rebounds, while Alix Hernandez finished with 11 points and eight boards. Bryan McGriff and De'Sean Mattox had nearly similar nights for EOU with 24 points apiece, while McGriff's 10 rebounds were one more than Mattox. Michael Crane also had a big night with 20 points and seven rebounds.

LAST WEEK: Evergreen had its hands full with road games against nationally ranked opponents. On Friday, Warner Pacific shot .645 from the field and built a big lead before settling for a 94-75 victory. Jordan Dam was on target from beyond the three-point line, going 6-for-8 to lead the Geoducks with 22 points. Donald Terry knocked down four three-point field goals in scoring 14 points. Warner Pacific's leading scorer, Doug Thomas, paced his team on this night with 18 points. The following night, Evergreen rallied from a 19-point deficit to within five points with two minutes remaining before Concordia pulled out an 80-68 win. Dam scored 19 points, followed by Brock Otis and Alix Hernandex with 13 each and Jordan Rawls with 12 for the Geoducks. Esvan Middleton had a big game for the Cavs with 16 points and 16 rebounds.
