No. 3-Ranked College of Idaho Cruises Past Evergreen

Box Score OLYMPIA – It took until the second half on Friday night, but visiting College of Idaho showed why it is the No. 3-ranked NAIA Division II men's basketball team in rolling past The Evergreen State College, 100-67, in Cascade Collegiate Conference action at CRC Gymnasium.

With the win the 'Yotes improved to 25-4 overall and to 14-3 in the conference, assuring themselves of back-to-back CCC titles for the first time. Evergreen is now 4-20 overall and 1-16 in the conference. Both teams conclude their regular season tomorrow night, College of Idaho playing at Northwest University in Kirkland and Evergreen hosting Eastern Oregon.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair that ended with the visitors taking a 48-44 lead into the halftime intermission. The 'Yote led by as many as 11 points late in the half before Evergreen reeled them back in with four three-point baskets, two by Donald Terry.

The second period was totally different. After shooting 45 percent in the opening half, the Geoducks were harried into 24 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes and finished the game shooting 24-for-67, or 36 percent. The game was still close at 56-50 in favor of the 'Yotes, however, when they scored 13 consecutive points, including threes by Josh Wilson, Jordan O'Byrne and Joey Nebeker, to break the game open with 14 minutes to play.

College of Idaho shot 62 percent in the opening half, 59 percent in the second and ended up at 61 percent for the game on 40-for-66 accuracy. The 'Yotes were especially impressive from beyond the three-point line in the second period, going 9-for-14 to finish the game 11-for-20, or .550 percent. O'Byrne, one of the conference's top three-point shooting specialists, hit three of his four treys in the second half.

A total of 16 different College of Idaho players saw action and 12 of them scored, led by O'Byrne and Marko Kovacevic with 17 points apiece. Sydney Donaldson added 12 points and Joe Vaz finished with 10. Kovacevic at 6-11 and Vaz at 7-1 towered over the much smaller Geoducks and had their way inside. Kovacevic finished with nine rebounds and four blocked shots and Wilson added eight rebounds as the visitors enjoyed a 43-28 advantage on the boards. Wilson led his team with five assists.

Alix Hernandez led the Geoducks with 18 points and eight rebounds and Jordan Dam added 10 points and five assists.
