McGriff Too Much for Evergreen to Handle

Jordan Dam closed his Evergreen career with 29 points against Eastern Oregon.
Box Score OLYMPIA – Bryan McGriff dominated near the basket, scoring 35 points to lead the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers to an 86-73 Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball win over The Evergreen State College on Friday night at CRC Gymnasium.

The Mountaineers won twice on the road this weekend to improve their overall record to 14-14 and their conference mark to 6-12. As a result, they will enter the conference tournament as the No. 7 seed and will play at Concordia at 7 p.m. next Tuesday night.

For the Geoducks, the season comes to a close with a 4-21 overall record, including 1-17 in the conference.

The undersized Geoducks simply couldn't find an answer for McGriff, a 6-7 junior who shot 12-for-20 from the field and 12-for-14 from the free throw line. He also accounted for nine rebounds as the Mountaineers owned that statistical category, 50-28.

The first half was close with six ties and nine lead changes. Evergreen led by as many as seven points with about 2:30 to play in the half, and Eastern Oregon held a four-point margin at the 9:42 mark. The Geoducks eventually took a 39-36 edge into the half.

Following the game's 13th tie, which came at 53-53 with 12:58 to play, Eastern Oregon scored six consecutive points, including four by McGriff. That small run ended up giving the Mountaineers a lead that they would not relinquish. Evergreen closed to within three points on a couple of occasions, but the visitors went 9-for-10 at the foul line in the final 2 1/2 minutes to put the game away.

McGriff was by no means the only player to put up big offensive numbers. Joining him in double-figure scoring for the Mountaineers were De'Sean Mattox with 18 and Case Rada with 14. Michael Crane scored eight points and led all players with 12 rebounds, six on each end of the floor.

Jordan Dam, playing his final game for Evergreen, had a 21-point second half on the way to a 29-point performance. He was 10-for-20 from the field, 8-for-10 from the charity stripe and also dished out three assists. Junior Brock Otis scored 23 points, 13 of them coming in the opening half, on 8-for-13 shooting from the field and 7-for-7 at the foul line. Alix Hernandez led the Geoducks with eight rebounds.

Eastern Oregon shot 48 percent overall and was an impressive 21-for-23 at the foul line, good for 91 percent. Evergreen hit 38 percent of its shot and was 20-for-23 at the charity stripe, or 87 percent.
