Women's Soccer: Geoducks Host CCC Preseason Favorite

Myka Arneson and the Geoducks host Northwest University on Saturday.
COMING UP: The Evergreen State College hosts the Northwest University Eagles in a Cascade Collegiate conference women's soccer match at noon Saturday, Sept. 26, at Geoduck Pitch.

FOLLOW THE GEODUCKS: Evergreen soccer fans unable to attend the game can follow the action via live stats at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/evergreen/#?.

ABOUT THE GEODUCKS: After opening the season with three non-conference losses, Evergreen started conference play last weekend by splitting a pair of road games. The Geoducks dropped a 5-0 decision last Friday afternoon to unbeaten Eastern Oregon in La Grande before getting an 87th minute goal to defeat Warner Pacific, 2-1, in a match played Saturday evening in Portland. Saturday's match against Warner Pacific provided a handful of firsts – the first win of the 2015 season, the first goal of the season, and the first collegiate goal by freshman Ava Mickola. The Geoducks have scored two goals this season while allowing 11 in their five matches.

ABOUT THE EAGLES: Northwest University was the preseason coaches' pick to successfully defend its Cascade Conference championship, but the season hasn't started well for the Eagles who are 2-6-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the CCC. It should be noted that Northwest had an extremely difficult pre-conference schedule with just one home match and road contests at powerhouses British Columbia, Concordia and nationally ranked The Master's. It is safe to say that the Eagles are experiencing the effects of playing without Acacia Johnson, last season's CCC Player of the Year, who scored 18 goals for the Eagles. This year's team has scored eight goals while allowing 24. Tiffany Taylor leads the Eagles with two goals and one assist for five points, while Lauren Patefield has accumulated a 2.21 goals against average and 44 saves while starting all nine matches in goal.

EASTERN OREGON 5, EVERGREEN 0: The Mountaineers scored four goals in the first half to remain unbeaten. The Geoducks managed just three shots against EOU, which has been the early season surprise team in the conference.

EVERGREEN 2, WARNER PACIFIC 1:   Stephanie Yoder scored the winning goal with 3:25 remaining as Evergreen picked up its first win of the season, defeating host Warner Pacific by a 2-1 score on Saturday night. The Geoducks got on the board in the 27th minute on the first collegiate goal by freshman forward Ava Mickola. The Knights scored the tying goal in the 54th minute and continued to pressure the Evergreen defense through most of the second half, but the Geoducks were the ones to score the winning goal. Yoder, a sophomore midfielder, tallied the match winner at 86:35 on a nicely worked Evergreen counter. While host Warner Pacific had a 20-10 advantage in shots, the Geoducks were able to put eight of their attempts on target compared to 13 for the Knights. Evergreen junior goalkeeper Kayla Baskett had a big match with 12 saves.
