Box Score Taylor Drey scored a career-best 30 points Friday night but it wasn't enough to prevent The Evergreen State College from dropping a 103-93 Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball contest to the visiting Eastern Oregon Mountaineers in CRC Gymnasium.
Eastern Oregon (13-11 overall, 8-6 CCC) had six players in double figures, led by Case Rada with 22, in sweeping the season series from the Geoducks (8-14, 5-9).
Drey, a junior guard, scored eight consecutive points, including bookend three-pointers, to help the Geoducks take an 18-9 lead just 5 1/2 minutes into the first half. The Geoducks eventually built a 22-11 lead on a Drey free throw eight minutes into the half, and that was as large a lead as they would have in the game. With Rada scoring 15 first half points, including a trio of three-pointers, the Mountaineers rallied to take a 47-40 lead at the intermission.
Evergreen regained the lead 3 1/2 minutes into the final period when
Jarrick Mitchell made a steal and dished ahead to Drey for a fastbreak finish. Moments later
Frankie Johnson made a steal and got the ball to Drey for another fastbreak finish at the rim, and
Brock Otis followed with another layup to give the hosts a 59-54 advantage with 15:32 to play.
Trailing 72-67, the Mountaineers ran off 12 unanswered points to wrest control from the Geoducks. Kalvin Johanson, who had three dunks in scoring 17 of his 19 points in the final half, had a pair of layups during the key run.Â
Evergreen made one final push at Eastern Oregon, cutting its deficit to 84-83 on Johnson's three ball with 4:08 to play, but another scoring surge of 11 consecutive points gave the Mountaineers a decisive 12-point bulge with 1:32 on the clock.
Drey scored his 30 points on 10-for-19 shooting, including 4-for-8 from beyond the three-point line, and
Danny Powell tallied 24 points and 16 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season.
Jarrick Mitchell recorded 15 points, eight assists and four steals, and Johnson tallied 13 points in the losing cause. Evergreen, which shot 51 percent overall and 47 percent from beyond the arc, played with second-leading scorer
Alix Hernandez, out with an ankle injury.
For EOU, Rada had his 22 points and Johnanson 19, followed by Trell Washington with 18 points and 12 rebounds, Brandon Hoston with 17 points, Tate De Laveaga with 12 points and Travis Meeker with 10. The Mountaineers shot 54 percent overall, matched Evergreen's 9-for-19 three-point shooting, and grabbed 40 rebounds to 29 for the hosts.
Evergreen is back in action at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow when College of Idaho visits CRC Gymnasium.
