Box Score Jarrick Mitchell scored a career-high 21 points, including two clutch free throws with 4.8 seconds left, to lead The Evergreen State College to a thrilling 93-90 Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over the Corban Warriors on Friday night in CRC Gymnasium.
Mitchell hit all six of his three-point shots and added five steals and four assists as the Geoducks (6-10 overall, 3-5 CCC) ended a four-game losing streak. AJ Monterossi scored a game-high 28 points for the Warriors (9-6, 3-4).
The Geoducks had led in the second half in each of their four recent defeats, so finishing the game has been a focus of the team's efforts in practice. The work paid off in a big way on Friday, particularly on defense.
Corban recovered an errant Evergreen pass following a scramble and got a timeout with 7.8 seconds to play, trailing 91-90. Monterossi received the inbound pass but immediately was double-teamed by
Frankie Johnson and
Alix Hernandez, and Monterossi's pass was picked off by Mitchell, who was fouled. He hit the first free throw, and after two timeouts, knocked down the next to give Evergreen a three-point edge.
"We talked about it. If it came down the last six, seven minutes of the game, we need to do some certain things, and number one on that list was defense. It think it showed up tonight. We really grinded that one out on the defensive end," Evergreen head coach
Tim Malroy said.
The Warriors had one last chance, but center Cody Crowe was way off the mark on a game-tying attempt from three-point range, and the Geoducks had the win.
"Jarrick was fantastic tonight, and it's not a fluke," Malroy said of his junior point guard from Las Vegas, Nev., "Jarrick has worked on his shot more than any player I've had over the course of two seasons. He's got his mid-range so comfortable now that the three feels like a step back. I'm really proud of him. It was a team effort, but Jarrick really stood out tonight."
Evergreen led 23-22 at the midway point of the opening half, but Taylor Fox came off of the bench to nail all five of his three-point shots as the Warriors took their largest lead of the game, 41-27, with about six minutes left in the half.
Trailing by 10 points on a couple of occasions early in the second half, the Geoducks went on a 12-2 run, started by a Mitchell three, to tie the game at 53-53 with 15:56 to play. When
Brock Otis nailed a triple, Evergreen had its largest lead of the game at 78-66 with 7:09 on the clock.
There were three ties and four lead changes after that, and in the end the Geoducks made the plays they needed to make to finish off the victory.
Mitchell led five Evergreen players in double figures. He was joined in that category by Johnson with 19, Hernandez and Otis with 16 each and
Ryan Quigley with 11. Quigley led the Geoducks with seven rebounds and Hernandez dished out a game-high 10 assists to finish with a double-double.
The Geoducks shot 56 percent overall and 54 percent (14-for-26) from beyond the three-point arc.
Monterossi had 28 points and five assists, Fox had 18 points, Cyrus Ward chipped in 14 points and five rebounds, and Cody Crowe scored 10 points for Corban. The Warriors shot 59 percent from the field and 45 percent from beyond the arc.
Evergreen is back in action at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow when it hosts Northwest Christian University.
