Evergreen Gets a Result, Tying Carroll in Two OTs

Evergreen's Loren Switzer and Carroll's Michaela Kueffler
Box Score OLYMPIA – The Evergreen State College women's soccer head coach Adam Fenster has said several times in recent weeks that his team has played well but is not getting results on the scoreboard.

Friday afternoon in a contest played mostly in a driving wind and rainstorm on waterlogged Geoduck Pitch, Fenster's squad finally got that hard-earned result with a 1-1 double overtime tie with defending Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer champion Carroll College.

The Geoducks (2-5-2 overall, 0-4-2 CCC) came into the match in last place in the standings and without a goal in five conference counters. The Saints (9-3-2, 6-0-1), on the other hand, were one point behind CCC leader Southern Oregon, which had played one extra match.

The first half played to form as the Saints took a 1-0 lead on Michaela Kueffler's seventh goal of the season, which came at the 7:05 mark. Payton Netz earned the assist as Carroll jumped out to the early lead.

The remainder of the half was mostly one-way traffic for the Saints, who finished the 45-minute period with a 9-0 advantage in shots.

The second half, however, was a completely different story. Taking advantage of the favorable wind that Carroll had enjoyed in the opening period, and also chasing for every ball and stringing passes together, the Geoducks spent long periods in the Carroll defensive end. Their hard work finally paid off at 62:03 when Ellie Engel, hustling after a deflection following a goalie clearance, beat Carroll keeper Jamie Carter to the ball and knocked it home before sliding into the right post.

Engel, who netted her second goal of the season, got to her feet and joined a raucous Evergreen celebration.

Evergreen's first goal after a five-match drought tied the score at 1-1, and it stayed that way over the next 48 minutes of action. Both teams at various points seemed likely to add to their goal total, but neither could break down the other's defense and the game ended in a deadlock.

While the Saints enjoyed a 22-10 advantage in total shots, the Geoducks kept pace with the Saints through the game's final half and two extra periods. Corner kicks also favored Carroll by a 7-4 margin.

Kayla Baskett, who has played every minute in goal for the Geoducks this season, finished the match with 10 saves. Carroll's Carter ended up with three saves.

Evergreen is scheduled to play its final home match of the 2016 season at 1 p.m. tomorrow against Great Falls, but that could change given the condition of Geoduck Pitch. League officials will make a decision approximately two hours prior to match time and an announcement will be made on www.gogeoducks.com and Evergreen athletic department social media.
