Geoducks, Argos Finish in 1-1 Double OT Tie

Ellie Engel
Box Score TUMWATER – The Evergreen State College and University of Great Falls battled each other and intermittent driving rain on Sunday morning before finishing in a 1-1 double overtime tie in Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer action at Tumwater High School Stadium.

The visiting Argos (2-9-1 overall, 2-6-1 CCC) benefitted from having the wind at their backs and had the better of the play in the first half, getting off seven shots to four for Evergreen, but the half ended scoreless.

The second half tilted the way of the Geoducks (2-5-3 overall, 0-4-3 CCC), who also enjoyed the advantage of the wind. Evergreen got off 12 shots in the period to just two for Great Falls, but both teams scored their only goals in that period.

Evergreen got on the board first at 72:38 on a nice solo effort by Ellie Engel, one of nine Geoducks seniors honored prior to the game. Engel dribbled through several defenders before shooting from about eight yards out, beating Great Falls keeper Kyra Dorvall to the upper right corner of the goal.

Less than four minutes later, at 76:53, the Argos knotted the score at 1-1. Malena Lennon ran onto an Evergreen back pass, took a couple of touches and drove a 10-yard shot into the upper right corner of the goal, leaving Geoducks keeper Alison Mackey with no chance.

Though neither team scored during the remainder of the time, Great Falls did get off six shots in the two 10-minute overtimes compared to two for Evergreen. Mackey came up big for the Geoducks in the 102nd minute, stopping Alejandra Guzman's point-blank header from a corner kick.

There were other good scoring opportunities for both teams during the game. In the 15th minute, Becca Wendt shot just wide from close range for Great Falls after a nice centering pass from Eme McLaughlin, and in the 32nd minute Evergreen's Alli Crane hit the cross bar from 22 yards out. The Geoducks had two other good chances but Dorvall came up with saves for the visitors, first stopping Engel's bouncing header in the 60th minute and then diving to her right to hold a 20-yard blast by Delaney Rice in the 67th minute.

Final shot totals showed Evergreen with an 18-15 advantage, though Great Falls had a 6-4 margin in corner kicks.

Dorvall ended the match with seven saves for the Argos, while Kayla Baskett had two saves and Mackey five while sharing time in the Evergreen goal.

Besides Engel, other Evergreen seniors honored before the game were Stephanie Yoder, Vanessa Zamora, Laura Barnes, Jasmine Berlin, Loren Switzer, Mackey and Baskett.

Evergreen returns to action at 2:30 p.m. (MDT) when it faces College of Idaho in Caldwell.
