Box Score BILLINGS, Mont. – After falling behind in the first eight minutes Sunday afternoon, The Evergreen State College showed its character, fighting back with three straight goals to earn a 3-2 Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer victory over the Rocky Mountain Bears.
The Geoducks (3-6-3 overall, 1-5-3 CCC) picked up their first conference win of the season and at the same time kept alive their slim hopes of earning a conference postseason tournament berth.
Rocky Mountain (7-8-0, 4-5-0) took the lead just 7:58 into the contest on Evaline Aberg's second goal of the season, the assist going to Lauryn Gamache.
Evergreen pressed for the equalizer, controlling the ball and getting off numerous shots before being rewarded with not one goal, but two, goals before the halftime break.
The first tally came at 38:11 when
Ana Vigil was in the right spot, following up the rebound of a save and slotting the ball home from about 11 yards out. The play started on the left wing when
Delaney Rice crossed the ball through the box to the right side, where
Alli Crain raced in and lashed a shot on goal. Rocky Mountain keeper Lia Unterholzner made the save, but the ball caromed to Vigil, who tied the score with her first goal of the season.
Less than four minutes later, at 41:54, Crain put the Geoducks on top, heading home a corner kick from
Haleigh Ryneski.
The Geoducks led 2-1 at the intermission and it was deserved as they held a 9-4 advantage in shots at that stage of the match.
Evergreen made the score 3-1 at the 56:14 mark and the goal came quickly. Following a foul,
Ellie Engel headed
Mackenzie Bolton's free kick far down the field, and
Delaney Rice beat a defender to the ball before poking it past Unterholzner and into the goal.
The Bears replied quickly when Alyssa Schneider scored her second goal of the season at 58:04, making the score 3-2 in Evergreen's favor with about 32 minutes to play.
The Geoducks had to weather a Rocky Mountain storm to the end as the Bears outshot the Geoducks by an 8-1 margin in the second half, but the game ended with Evergreen in the win column.
"I am so proud and impressed with this team's character," Evergreen head coach
Adam Fenster said. "It's been a long, tough season, and to finally see a game all the way through was very nice and rewarding."
Rocky ended up with a 12-10 edge in shots and 4-3 margin in corner kicks. Evergreen goalkeeper
Kayla Baskett collected six saves to earn the victory, while Unterholzner ended the game with three saves for the Bears.
The Geoducks play thier final two regular season games next weekend, facing Northwest Christian in Springfield, Ore., at 3 p.m. Friday and Corban at 8 p.m. Saturday in Salem, Ore. A loss in either game would finish Evergreen's playoff hopes, while two wins would get the team into the postseason.
