Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Evergreen State College saw its Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer playoffs hopes come to an end on Friday afternoon in a 2-1 defeat to the host Northwest Christian Beacons at Willamalane Sports Complex.
While the Geoducks (3-7-3 overall, 1-6-3 CCC) saw their long-shot playoff hopes end, the Beacons (7-9-1, 4-5-1) qualified for the conference postseason tournament for the first time in program history.
Evergreen took the lead 26:34 into the match when senior defender
Vanessa Zamora beat NCU keeper Katie Hastings to a loose ball and scored from three yards out. The goal was the second of the season for Zamora.
The score remained 1-0 in Evergreen's favor through the remainder of the half despite the Beacons getting off seven shots to three for the Geoducks through the opening 45 minutes.
Northwest Christian took less than seven minutes of the second half to tie the score, and it grabbed the lead about six minutes after that.
The first goal came at 51:52 from Joceline Howard with the assist going to JaNae Haggard. Howard took the pass and got in behind the defense and around Evergreen keeper Kayla Baskett before finishing into the empty net.
The Beacons made it 2-1 at 57:54 with Howard hitting a short cross for Maggie McCausland to finish with a strike from about five yards out.
Evergreen was unable to get a shot on target after that.
Northwest Christian finished with 16 total shots, including nine on goal, to six shots with two on goal for Evergreen. NCU also enjoyed a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Baskett finished the match with seven saves while Hastings had one for the Beacons.
Evergreen finishes its season at 8 p.m. Saturday against Corban with the match to be held at Willamette University in Salem, Ore.
