Box Score Taylor Drey poured in 29 points Tuesday night to lead The Evergreen State College to a 92-81 non-conference men's basketball victory over the Lewis & Clark Pioneers at Costantino Recreation Center.
Drey was 10-for-20 from the field to lead five Evergreen players in double-figure scoring.
Shawn Spencer scored 19 points,
Dalton Groenewold had 12 and
Ryan Quigley and
Jonathan Jack-Nixon both added 10 to help lead the Geoducks (3-4) to the victory.
The Pioneers had four players in double figures, Markel Leonard and Andrew Vickers getting 17 apiece and both Cannen Roberson and Kyle Owens adding 16.
The two teams battled on even terms through the opening 13 minutes before Lewis & Clark broke a 20-20 tie by running off nine unanswered points, including a three-pointer and two free throws by Kyle Owens, to go on top 29-20 with about five minutes left in the period.
Evergreen whittled away at the deficit and tied the score at 37-37 a couple of seconds before the half on a layup by Groenewold.
The Geoducks came out of the locker room and scored the first seven points of the second half on a breakaway dunk by Groenewold, a three-pointer by Drey and a layup by Quigley, forcing a timeout from Lewis & Clark head coach Dinari Foreman. The Pioneers responded by coming back to tie the score at 48-48, the last three coming on a trio of free throws by Leonard.
The lead went back-and-forth for the next several minutes, the Pioneers taking their final lead on an Owens jumper with 10:40 to play. When Spencer took a pass from
Dakari Jefferson and hit a jumper in the key, the Geoducks took a 67-66 advantage at the midway point of the final half, and they would stay on top the rest of the way.
Evergreen took its first double-digit margin at 81-71 with 5:09 to play on a Drey jumper, and they never led by less than seven after that. Jack-Nixon's steal and layup with 38 seconds resulted in the final score and also the home team's largest lead of the contest.
The Geoducks shot 55 percent (34-for-62) from the floor and also enjoyed a 45-34 advantage on the boards. All 10 players to see action grabbed at least three rebounds, with Quigley taking down a team-high six. Jack-Nixon led the team with five assists in 20 minutes off of the bench.
The Pioneers shot 38 percent (24-for-63) from the field, including 11-for-31 from beyond the three-poit line. Jonathan Boddie led all players with 11 rebounds. And Cory Coombe had a game-high six assists while playing 24 minutes in a reserve role.
Evergreen returns to Cascade Collegiate Conference action this coming weekend with home games against Multnomah on Friday and Warner Pacific on Saturday. Tipoff for both contests is slated for 7:30 p.m. inside Costantino Recreation Center.
