Box Score The Evergreen State College held off a spirited comeback by the visiting Multnomah Lions on Friday night in taking a 99-95 Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory in Costantino Recreation Center.
The Geoducks (4-4 overall, 1-1 CCC) held a 16-point advantage in the second half but had to weather a late surge by the Lions (3-8, 0-2) to win their third consecutive game.
Taylor Drey had his second consecutive big-scoring night for the Geoducks with 34 points after getting 29 in a Tuesday night non-conference win over Lewis & Clark. The senior guard was 10-for-17 from the field, including an impressive 7-for-11 from beyond the three-point line, and he also hit 7-for-8 from the charity stripe. To round out his solid performance, Drey contributed five assists and three steals.
As impressive as he was, howver, Drey wasn't the game's leading scorer.
Multnomah junior guard Darius Redrick poured in 35 points, shooting 8-for-13 overall, 4-for-5 from three-point range, and also knocking down all 15 of his free throw attempts.
The visitors from Portland came out on fire, scoring nine of the game's first 10 points, and they grabbed their first double-digit lead at 23-13 on a pair of Max Upchurch free throws at 11:02 of the opening period.
The Lions still led 34-23 when the Geoducks put together a 16-5 run to tie the score for the first time at 39-39 with 2:30 to play in the half. Drey had bookend three-point baskets during the run, with
Jarrick Mitchell getting assists on both shots.
After rallying back into the game, Evergreen took a 46-44 lead into the intermission.
The Geoducks surged in the second half and went ahead 69-53 on a
Ryan Quigley layup with 11:38 on the clock, but the visitors were not done. With Redrick leading the charge by scoring 21 of his points in the final half, Multnomah pulled to within two points at 93-91 on a Redrick three ball with 1:21 to play.
Evergreen iced the game at the foul line as
Dalton Groenewold hit a pair of free throws and Quigley hit four in a row, including a pair with 17.3 seconds to play.
Quigley finished with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, and Groenewold had 11 points and seven boards. The Geoducks shot 53 percent overall (30-for-57) and were 29-for-39 from the foul line.
Thomas Simien had a double-double for the Lions with 17 points and 12 rebounds, Ben Grandle scored 18 points and Ezekiel added 10 points and eight boards.
Both teams play tomorrow night, Evergreen hosting Warner Pacific and Multnomah playing at Northwest.
