Multnomah Spoils Evergreen Men's Senior Night

Seniors Alix Hernandez, Frankie Johnson and Donald Terry.
Box Score Ben Grandle swished a pair of free throws with 0.8 seconds left Saturday night to spoil The Evergreen State College's Senior Night as the visiting Multnomah Lions took a 92-91 Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball win at CRC Gymnasium.

The win was just the second of the conference season for Multnomah (6-23 overall, 2-18 CCC), while Evergreen (8-20, 5-15) saw its season come to an end with its ninth consecutive defeat.

There were four ties and three leads changes in a second half that saw the Geoducks lead for the majority of the time. With his team trailing by three points, Multnomah's Blake Updike drove to the basket and scored to make it a 91-90 Evergreen lead with 11.4 seconds left.

After Frankie Johnson missed the front end of a bonus foul shot with 9.6 seconds on the clock, Jason Wyncoop grabbed the rebound for the Lions, who called a timeout with 7.1 seconds to play. With the Geoducks applying pressure, Grandle was fouled on the left wing. After an Evergreen timeout, the freshman guard stepped to the foul line and hit both to give his team the win.

The Geoducks had one last desperation heave from Alix Hernandez just inside the midcourt line, but his shot bounced off the left rim.

The second half was a reflection of the opening 20 minutes as the two teams battled on even terms through 40 entertaining minutes of collegiate basketball. Multnomah's largest lead of the game came at 48-39 on Updike's three-point basket with 2:51 left in the first half, but the Geoducks closed the half by scoring 12 unanswered points to take a 51-48 edge at the intermission.

Hernandez, who was Evergreen's driving force in the opening 20 minutes with 21 points, six rebounds and six assists, scored the team's final 14 points of the opening period.

The second half turned into the Donald Terry show as the Evergreen senior rattled home four of his eight three-pointers on his way to 24 points. In fact, Terry drained consecutive long-range threes to give Evergreen an eight-point lead, its largest of the game, inside the final nine minutes.

Facing an 83-76 deficit, the Lions rolled off eight consecutive points, the first six on layups by physical center Thomas Simien, to take an 84-83 advantage with 3:31 to play.

Evergreen was able to rebuild a three-point lead on several occasions but could not maintain that advantage down the stretch.

Hernandez had a near triple-double in his final college game, tallying 27 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Terry, as mentioned, got all 24 of his points on 8-for-16 shooting from outside the three-point arc, and senior forward Brock Otis added 18 points and eight rebounds. Rounding out the Evergreen senior class on this night were Frankie Johnson – the only four-year team member – with nine assists, two blocks and eight points, and Landon Rushton with five points.

The Geoducks shot 49 percent from the field and hit 35 percent on 12-for-34 shooting from beyond the three-point line.

The Lions, who recently set a NAIA record with 71 three-point attempts, were 16-for-46 from long range in this game, good for 35 percent, and they shot 45 percent overall. They also enjoyed a 51-29 advantage in rebounding.

Beside Updike's 28 points, Simien scored 21 while Grandle and Jordan Paris both added 14. Grandle led all players with 13 rebounds and Updike added 10.
