Box Score SALEM, Ore. - The Evergreen State College scrapped for 40 minutes Saturday night but ended up on the wrong end of a 97-86 Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball decision to the Corban Warriors at C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
The winning Warriors (14-10 overall, 8-8 CCC) got a game-high 34 points from Cyrus Ward and 27 more from AJ Monterossi in turning back the Geoducks (8-17, 5-12), who were led by
Taylor Drey with 25 points.
For Drey, it was the junior guard's third 25-plus scoring performance in the last four games.
Brock Otis scored 15 points and both
Alix Hernandez and
Ryan Quigley tallied 12 for Evergreen. Hernandez also led the team with nine rebounds and five assists.
The Geoducks faced a significant height disadvantage against the Warriors, who made them pay by going inside to Ward, a 6-6 senior. He was 14-for-17 from the field and 6-for-7 at the charity stripe in scoring his 34 points. Monterossi, Corban's point guard, not only scored 27 points - 12 at the foul line - but he led both teams with seven assists.
Corban ended up shooting 61 percent against the undersized Geoducks, and it also enjoyed a 42-27 margin in rebounding. Joel Johnson came off the bench to grab 14 to lead his team.
Evergreen, meanwhile, shot 55 percent from the field and 43 percent from beyond the three-point line in leading by as many as seven points in the first half before the teams went to the locker room tied at 46-46.
Brock Otis hit a three-ball to give the visitors a three-point edge moments into the second half, but fast break baskets by Johnson and Caleb Herzberg put the Warriors ahead to stay.
Corban would eventually lead by as many as 14 points before settling for the 11-point win.
Evergreen shot 46 percent overall and turned the ball over just five times.
The Geoducks, still in the conference postseason tournament playoff hunt, return to action against host Walla Walla University at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14.
