Box Score SALEM, Ore. - The Evergreen State College scored a pair of goals within a two-minute span in the second half Sunday afternoon to defeat the Sierra Nevada College Eagles, 3-1, in a non-conference women's soccer match played at the Corban University field.
With the win, the Geoducks improve to 1-1 this season, while the loss drops Sierra Nevada to 0-3.
The Eagles got on the board just 2:49 into the contest when Allison Piccinini scored off an indirect free kick, the assist going to Makayla Long.
Evergreen knotted the scored with their first goal and of the season, that coming from
Haleigh Ryneski. She collected a pass from
Delaney Rice and beat Eagles goalkeeper Rachel Marler at the 20:46 mark of the period.
After outshooting their opponents by a 9-5 margin in the first half, the Geoducks gained complete control through the final 45 minutes. They took 16 shots to just three for Sierra Nevada and also enjoyed a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Evergreen's dominance paid off at 67:29 when
Vanessa Zamora followed up
Kylie Gorton's shot and found the back of the net. The Geoducks increased their lead to two goals at the 69:38 mark when
Ellie Engel beat Marler from close range.
Overall, the Geoducks owned a 25-8 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks over their opponents. Marler was forced to make nine saves for the Eagles while Evergreen keeper
Kayla Baskett was called on to make four stops.
Evergreen returns to action at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, when they travel to Forest Grove, Ore., to face the Pacific University Boxers.
