Evergreen Falls to Corban's Late Run

Shawn Spencer
Box Score SALEM, Ore. – Corban used a decisive 15-5 scoring run over a five-minute stretch late in the second half to beat The Evergreen State College, 84-70, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball game played Friday night inside C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

The Warriors (10-7 overall, 3-4 CCC) scored on seven out of eight possessions during the key surge while at the same time the Geoducks (5-9, 2-6) scored twice, turned the ball over twice and missed field goal attempts on four other possessions.

With the score tied 51-51 with nine minutes to play, the Warriors went on their game-decided spurt. During one possession the Warriors got four tries at the basket as 6-9 center Joel Johnson grabbed three consecutive offensive rebounds, part of his game-high 14 rebounds for the hosts.

The Warriors eventually opened up a 66-56 lead on a three-pointer by Caleb Herzberg with 4:03 to play, and then held on for the win, at the same time handing Evergreen its fifth straight defeat.

The game seemed headed toward a blowout from the start as Evergreen couldn't buy a basket in the early going, missing nine of their first 10 shots and falling behind, 24-11, after the Warriors scored 11 unanswered points.

Jonathan Jack-Nixon ended the Evergreen cold spell with a layup, Taylor Drey followed with a jumper, and after a pair of Dustin Meade free throws, Jack-Nixon closed an 8-0 spurt with another layup. With Meade hitting a pair of free throws and a layup, Evergreen added another 8-0 run late in the half to take a 35-32 lead at the break.

After shooting as if there were lid in the basket in the opening minutes, the Geoducks ended up going 12-for-26, or 46 percent, for the first half. Meade and Jack-Nixon were crucial to the strong close to the opening 20 minutes, Meade tallying eight points and Jack-Nixon adding six, all on layups.

On the other hand, Corban cooled down considerably and ended the half at 10-for-28, or 38 percent.

The second half was close through the first 11 minutes until the hosts finally pulled away.

The Geoducks shot 26-for-61 (43 percent) overall, including an ice-cold 4-for-19 (21 percent) from three-point range and 14-for-24 (58 percent) at the foul line. They also lost the rebound battle, 48-34.

Shawn Spencer scored 22 points, Drey added 13 and Meade scored 11 to lead Evergreen.

The Warriors finished 27-for-60 (45 percent) overall and 9-for-20 (45 percent) from beyond the arc. Caleb Dozier, Mike Send and Chris Martin all scored 14 points for Corban.

Evergreen returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Saturday when it faces No. 7-ranked Northwest Christian in Eugene.
