The Evergreen State College put an end to a 13-game men's basketball losing streak on Saturday night inside Costantino Recreation Center, beating the visiting Corban Warriors, 80-77, in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.
The Geoducks (6-17 overall, 3-14 CCC) enjoyed balanced scoring with six different players scoring in double figures.
Shawn Spencer,
Dustin Meade and
Jonathan Jack-Nixon all tallied 13 points, followed by
Ryan Quigley with 12,
Dalton Groenewold with 11 and
Jaurence Chisholm with 10.
Joel Johnson scored 17 points and Jake Love added 16 more for the Warriors (14-12, 7-9).
Spencer and Johnson shared game-high rebounding honors with seven apiece for their respective teams, while Corban's AJ Monterossi led all players with five assists.
Evergreen had been in this situation more than a few times during its losing streak but it was the opponents who made the key plays down the stretch. Tonight, it was the Geoducks who came through when it mattered.
After leading 44-37 at the half, the Geoducks twice built their lead to nine points before Corban battled back to not only wipe out the deficit, but built its own seven-point margin. That came at 65-58 on Joel Johnson's dunk and free throw with 10:55 to play.Â
The visitors stayed on top for three minutes when Evergreen got its own conventional three-point play. Jack-Nixon challenged the 6-foot, 9-inch Johnson at the rim and finished, followed by the free throw, to put the hosts on top, 69-67.
Evergreen never could pull away, however, and Corban regained the lead at 77-76 when Andrew Evans hit a trio of foul shots with 27.6 second to go.
Taylor Drey responded at the other end, hitting two charity shots with 16.4 seconds on the clock to make it a 78-77 Evergreen lead, and moments later Evans traveled with the ball under pressure from Evergreen's
Jarrick Mitchell.Â
The Geoducks had a chance to add to their lead but missed twice at the foul line, but at the other end Evans was missed a 13-footer under duress and the Geoducks got the rebound. From there, Mitchell iced the win, sinking two foul shots with 3.0 seconds left. Corban's Love put a desperation runner from about 35-feet, but it missed the mark and Evergreen felt the weight lift from the shoulders
Evergreen shot 42 percent (25-for-60) from the field but was an impressive 23-for-28 at the foul line, including 18-for-22 in the second half. It also enjoyed a narrow 37-36 edge in rebounds.
Corban finished at 45 percent (28-for-62) from the field and was 13-for-21 at the charity stripe.Â
