Improving Geoducks Host Northwest Eagles

Haleigh Ryneski (7)
COMING UP: The Evergreen State College (0-6-2 overall, 0-3-1 CCC) plays just one match this weekend, hosting Cascade Collegiate Conference travel partner Northwest University at 1 p.m. Saturday, at Geoduck Pitch.

FOLLOW THE GEODUCKS: Evergreen fans unable to make it out to Geoduck Pitch can still follow the action of home contests via live stats at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/evergreen/.

ABOUT THE GEODUCKS: Now at the halfway point in the season, improvement continues to come for the Geoducks, who were especially strong on defense last weekend while finishing 0-1-1 on an Oregon road trip. Evergreen allowed just one goal in each match against Warner Pacific and Eastern Oregon. Junior goalkeeper Emily Sorenson received CCC Defender of the Week honorable mention recognition after recording 20 total saves, including 12 against Eastern Oregon, in 200 minutes. Sorenson ranks first in the conference with 6.4 saves per match and she has a 1.69 goals against average. The Geoducks, who average exactly 10 shots per match, continue their search for more offensive production as they have scored just four goals in eight matches. Three of the four goals have been scored by junior forward Hunter Thomson Terrel, all on dead ball situations, while the other came from sophomore midfielder Delaney Rice on a nice individual effort from the run of play. Thomson Terrel, incidentally, is tied for sixth among conference players with her three goals, and she is second with 3.12 shots per match. Rice ranks 10th in the CCC with 2.5 shots per match.

ABOUT NORTHWEST: The Eagles, at 4-6-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the conference, have certainly been a surprise at this point of the season. They were expected to challenge for the regular season conference title after a 2016 postseason run that ended in the semifinals at the NAIA national tournament, but they sit in a sixth-place tie with just three points. They have scored 16 goals but have allowed 12 in their first 10 matches. There is plenty of individual offensive talent as reflected in the statistics – freshman midfielder Madison Morrow is the conference leader with five assists, junior midfielder Katie Michkiosky has five goals, sophomore forward Nadine Huff has three goals and junior midfielder Whitney Weaver has three assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Kat Sanchez has a 0.97 goals against average to lead the defense.

SENIOR STABILITY: As the lone senior on the 2017 Evergreen women's soccer team, Haleigh Ryneski has proved a stabilizing force on a team that has a combined 14 freshmen and sophomores. Ryneski has a long and outstanding history at Evergreen, having started in 50 matches while playing in 51 of the program's 53 matches since her freshman season.

EVERGREEN 1, WARNER PACIFIC 1: The Geoducks and Knights battled through two overtime periods before settling for a 1-1 in Portland last Friday. Hunter Thomson Terrel scored Evergreen's goal from a free kick early in the second half.

EASTERN OREGON 1, EVERGREEN 0: Emily Sorenson was stellar in goal with 12 saves and the Geoducks weathered a 29-shot effort from the home team, but a second half goal was all that the Mountaineers needed in La Grande on Saturday.
