Box Score The Evergreen State College built a 24-point lead early in the second half and then held off a furious Corban rally to take a 76-73 Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory on Friday night inside Costantino Recreation Center.
The visiting Warriors (12-10 overall, CCC 6-8) had two attempts at a tying basket but Chris Martin missed the first and Evergreen's
Quinton Whitfield blocked the second by Jett Sobotta.
Pat Ling scored a career-high 31 points to lead the Geoducks (5-18, 4-10), while Andrew Evans hit five three-pointers on the way to 16 points for Corban.
The Geoducks played arguably their best basketball of the season in the opening half, shooting 63 percent from the field in building up a 46-24 advantage at the intermission. Ling scored 18 of his total in the first 20 minutes and
Ryan Quigley added 12 of his 14 points as Evergreen dominated the period.
Corban rallied in the second half behind 8-for-15 shooting from three-point range, including Evans knocking down all five of his treys in the half. At the same time, Evergreen shot just 42 percent in the final 20 minutes.
The visitors tied the game at 73-73 with 1:05 to play after consecutive three-point baskets by Chris Martin and Evans before the Geoducks regained a one-point lead on a Ling free throw.
Kevin Clayton, Jr. made a steal for Evergreen on Corban's next possession and Quigley drilled two free throws with 16.4 seconds on the clock. That led to Corban's final two attempts and the Geoducks pulling out the victory.
Ling, who topped his previous career-high of 28 points, was 14-for-21 from the field and also added five assists and three steals. Quigley led the Geoducks with eight rebounds and Jaurence Chisholm added 13 points and three assists. Evergreen finished the game shooting 54 percent from the field (29-for-54) and only took six three-pointers, making three of those.
Joining Evans in double figures for the Warriors were Joel Johnson and Beau Roggenbach with 11 apiece and Sobotta with 10. Corban enjoyed a 41-31 rebounding advantage, led by Caleb Dozier with six, but shot just 37 percent overall (22-for-59) and 33 percent from three-point range (10-for-30).
Both teams play again tomorrow, Evergreen hosting Northwest Christian and Corban playing Northwest University in Kirkland.
