Men's Basketball

Geoducks Host Cal-Maritime, Portland Bible

COMING UP: Evergreen (0-2) opens the home portion of its 2018-19 men's basketball season this weekend, hosting Cal-Maritime on Friday and Portland Bible on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to tip off inside Costantino Recreation Center at 7 p.m. In addition to the Geoducks playing twice, the CRC will be the site of a neutral-site game between Northwest University and Portland Bible starting at 5 p.m. Friday.

FOLLOW THE GEODUCKS: Evergreen basketball fans unable to attend home games can still follow their favorite team via live stats - http://sidearmstats.com/evergreen/mbball/xlive.htm and pay-per-view video stream - https://portal.stretchinternet.com/evergreen/#.

ABOUT THE GEODUCKS: Evergreen brings a 0-2 overall record into the game after losing a pair of games in Oregon last weekend. While they have averaged 95.0 points in those two games, the Geoducks have allowed an average of 116.0 to uptempo Pacific University and Linfield College offenses. Evergreen is shooting 49.3 percent overall from the field but needs to clean up the turnover game, averaging 30.5 through the two games. All of those numbers, of course, are skewed by the small "sample size." Senior forward Ryan Quigley is the leading scorer with 21.0 points per game and he adds 6.0 rebounds per game to the mix. Other Evergreen leaders include junior point guard Raven Frazier with 13.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, senior forward Jared Roffler with averages of 12.5 points and 11.0 rebounds, and sophomore forward Lukas Kelly with 12.0 points and 5.5 boards per contest.

ABOUT CAL-MARITIME: The Keelhaulers come to Olympia with a 4-3 overall record after a 64-60 loss to No. 21-ranked Menlo College. The team's leaders are junior guard Josh Hauser with averages of 18.3 points and 4.1 assists per game, and sophomore forward Zavier Lucero with 16.0 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. Other top contributors are junior center Ben Borja with 11.6 points and 2.6 blocks per contest and senior guard Justin Eisen with averages of 11.4 points and 3.1 made three-pointers per contest. The Keelhaulers have played three other Cascade Collegiate Conference teams this season, beating Eastern Oregon and losing to Corban and Multnomah. Cal-Maritime, officially named California State University-Maritime Academy, is located north of Los Angeles in Vallejo, Calif.

ABOUT PORTLAND BIBLE: The Portland Bible team that the Geoducks will face on Saturday night is quite different from the one that came into the CRC a year ago and left with a 65-61 victory. One common factor on the roster is guard Troy Woodward, who came off the bench a year ago to scorch the Geoducks with 21 points, including 5-for-6 shooting from beyond the three-point line. The Wildcats are 0-4 this year and allow 101.7 points per game while scoring an average of 69.5.

LAST WEEK: The Geoducks opened the 2018-19 season last Friday with a 127-115 loss to Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., though they led by 11 points with just under 10 minutes to play. Several single game records were set, including most combined points, most points by an opponent, most points in a losing cause, and most turnovers (42). Two days later, playing an afternoon game against Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., Evergreen lost by a 105-75 score.

WHAT'S AHEAD: Evergreen will play a couple of non-conference road games next week, facing the Pacific Lutheran Lutes in Parkland at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, and the Central Washington Wildcats in Ellensburg at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21. The Cascade Conference season gets underway on the CRC hardwood at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, against nationally ranked Warner Pacific. Also on the conference slate that weekend is a game against the record-setting Multnomah Lions on Saturday night.
