Geoducks Host Northwest Christian, Corban

COMING UP: Evergreen (4-9 overall, 0-5 Cascade Collegiate Conference) hosts the Northwest Christian University Beacons on Saturday and the Corban University Warriors on Sunday in Cascade Collegiate Conference games. Both contests are scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. inside Costantino Recreation Center.

ABOUT THE GEODUCKS: Evergreen remains in search of its first conference victory this season and also hopes to put an end to a seven-game losing streak. The Geoducks average 78.2 points and 38.5 rebounds per game compared to averages of 93.8 points and 37.8 rebounds for their opponents. Junior guard Elijah Fuller is the scoring leader with 14.5 points per game and senior forward Ryan Quigley contributes 12.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while ranking in a sixth-place tie in NAIA Division III free throw shooting with 90.6 percent accuracy. Junior forward Dalton Groenewold has increased his scoring output to an average of 9.5 points per game and he leads the team with an average of 7.2 rebounds per contest.

ABOUT NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN: The Beacons (10-3 overall, 2-1 CCC) feature one of the most explosive offenses in the country, led by senior guard Austin Tyner and his 23.4 points-per-game average, which ranks ninth in NAIA Division II men's basketball. He averages slightly more than three made three-pointers per game while shooting 45.3 percent from long range. Other top performers include sophomore guard and University of Oregon transfer Ernest Ugoagu with 17.0 points per game and 45.5 percent accuracy from distance, and senior forward Reece Robinson with 14.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest. NCU scores 93.5 points per game, fifth best in NAIA Division II, and is out-rebounding its opposition by 4.1 per contest.

RECENT RESULTS: In 22 games played since the 2007-08 campaign, Northwest Christian has won 13 and Evergreen has won nine, though the Beacons have defeated the Geoducks 12 out of the last 14 times the teams have played.

ABOUT CORBAN: The Warriors (9-4 overall, 0-3 CCC) ranks fourth in NAIA Division II men's basketball rebounding margin with 12.9 more rebounds per game than their opponents, led by sophomore forward Beau Roggenbach with an average of 10.8 rebounds per game and senior center Joel Johnson with 6.4 per contest. Johnson is the team scoring leader, averaging 14.1 points, followed by Roggenback with 13.2 and junior guard AJ Hodges with 10.4 points per game. Johnson is shooting 72.3 percent from the floor, fourth in the nation. Corban scores 85.1 points per contest compared to 72.4 for its opposition.

RECENT RESULTS: Following a split of last season's two games, Evergreen and Corban are tied at 11 wins apiece in the series dating back to the 2007-08 season.

LAST WEEK: Evergreen took the game down to the closing seconds on Wednesday, Dec. 19, but in the end came out on the short end of a low-scoring 67-64 Cascade College Conference decision to the host Northwest University Eagles in Kirkland. Ryan Quigley scored 19 points to lead the Geoducks.

WHAT'S AHEAD: The Geoducks head into 2019 with a long road trip east over the Cascade Mountain Range for games against Eastern Oregon in La Grande on Friday, Jan. 4, and versus College of Idaho in Caldwell on Saturday, Jan. 5.
