Geoducks Journey to Oregon's Willamette Valley

COMING UP: Evergreen (5-14 overall, 1-10 Cascade Collegiate Conference) travels to Oregon's Willamette Valley this weekend for games against Corban University and Northwest Christian University. The Geoducks face the Corban Warriors on Friday in Salem and meet the NCU Beacons on Saturday in Eugene with both games scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip off.

FOLLOW THE GEODUCKS: Both Corban and Northwest Christian provide live stats and a live video stream. Go to www.corbanwarriors.com and www.gobeacons.com to access live stats and video. Live stats and video links have also been created under the Schedule tab on the www.gogeoducks.com site.

ABOUT THE GEODUCKS: Evergreen's leading scorer is junior guard Elijah Fuller, who averages 12.6 points per game. At one point this season Fuller had double-figure scoring in 13 straight games, but he has registered double digits only once in the past three contests. The Geoducks would love to see the junior guard regain his earlier solid shooting touch. Senior forward Ryan Quigley, who will finish on the Evergreen top 5 for games played and total rebounds in addition to making a legitimate push for the career free throw percentage record, averages 11.6 points per game and has two consecutive 17-point games to his credit. Junior forward Dalton Groenewold averages 9.9 points and leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per game, while junior point guard Raven Frazier paces the team with 3.4 assists per game. Evergreen is in the throes of a slump with 12 losses in its last 13 games, with the one victory coming by a 72-71 score against Corban on Dec. 30 in Olympia.

ACADEMIC HONORS: A trio of Evergreen men's basketball student-athletes have earned Academic All-Cascade Conference honors. Senior Ryan Quigley picked up his third award, while senior forward Malik Redmond and sophomore forward Lukas Kelly were both honored for the first time. To earn recognition as a CCC scholar-athlete, a student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 and sophomore standing.

ABOUT CORBAN: Since losing to the Geoducks back on Dec. 30, the Warriors (14-7 overall, 5-6 CCC) have won four of six, including road upsets against nationally ranked Southern Oregon and last week versus No. 2 College of Idaho (85-83 in overtime). Junior guard AJ Hodges is this week's CCC Player of the Week after his 33-point performance against College of Idaho and he leads the Warriors with 14.3 points per game. Other standouts are senior center Joel Johnson with 12.6 points per game and a 70.1 field goal percentage (third best in NAIA Division II), and sophomore forward Beau Roggenbach with 11.9 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. Roggenbach ranks second in the conference and seventh nationally in rebounds per game.

THE FIRST TIME: Raven Frazier hit four straight free throws in the waning moments as the Geoducks rallied from an 11-point second half deficit to beat Corban, 72-71. The Warriors had two chances at the potential game-winning field goal in the closing seconds but came up empty. Dalton Groenewold poured in 22 points and Mana Niu added 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench to lead the home team to victory.

RECENT RESULTS: In 23 games dating back to the 2007-08 season, Evergreen has 12 wins and Corban has 11.

ABOUT NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN: The Beacons (15-6 overall, 7-4 CCC), who host Northwest University on Friday night, hold down third place in the conference standings and receive votes in the NAIA Division II Top 25. Senior guard Austin Tyner leads one of the NAIA's most prolific scoring offenses with 21.3 points per game while shooting 55.4 percent overall and 43.4 percent from three-point range. Junior point guard Tyrus Hosley follows with 15.9 points per game and 45.6 percent shooting outside the arc, while senior forward Reece Robinson contributes 13.3 points and 5.9 points for the Beacons. Northwest Christian averages 91.9 points per game, sixth best nationally, and features five players who average at least 13.2 points per game.

THE FIRST TIME: Tyrus Hosley scored 22 of his game-high 25 points in the first half to lead visiting Northwest Christian to a 108-71 victory over Evergreen back on Dec. 29. The Beacons shot 56.8 percent overall and knocked down a dozen three-point shots. Malik Redmond and Elijah Fuller both scored 11 points to lead the Geoducks.

RECENT RESULTS: In 23 games played between the teams since the 2007-08 campaign, Northwest Christian has won 14 and Evergreen has won nine, though the Beacons have defeated the Geoducks 13 out of the last 15 times the teams have played. Evergreen upset the then-defending champion Beacons, 81-80, last season in Eugene.

LAST WEEK: Evergreen dropped a pair of contests at home last weekend, falling 107-76 to Southern Oregon and 85-68 to No. 14-ranked Oregon Tech. Ryan Quigley led the Geoducks with 17 points in both games.
