Evergreen State College Track & Field programs had a special day in Parkland at the Pacific Lutheran University Invite, with school records, multi top ten marks, and several season bests.
In back to back weeks the Women's 4 x 100 Meter Relay where
Corona Parker,
Abigail Strickland,
Iris Campesino, and
Nadya Miller broke their previous school record (56.17), set just last week at the UPS Ed Boitano Stadium, with a time of 55.25, good for Silver! Freshman
Braxton Claridy had arguably the best sprint double in Geoduck history, when he completed an 11.36 in the 100m (.01 seconds off the school record, held by Jonathan Jack-Nixon, 2016), and then setting the 200m record with a time of 22.38, which placed him 3
rdand 4
th in the invite, respectively. Geoducks' other top ranked all-time marks were
Mark Tiersma with the second best ever in the 5k in 15:38.26 and
Abigail Strickland (5
th All-Time) in the 200 with a time of 28.80
"For a relay team to have back-to-back records within a six-day span is extremely rare given the baton exchange zone hand-off complexities and coordination required," said Assistant Coach Scott Copeland. "Even more amazing, for a sprinter like Braxton to come so close to a second school record in a meet this early in the season forecasts the possibility for faster times and more records in the next few weeks."
Braxton Claridy's performances qualified him for the CCC Championships joining Mark, Corona, Abigail, Iris, Nadya, and
Alauna Carstens. The Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships, to be held at OIT's Moehl Stadium from May 9-11.
Assistant Coach
Katie Burnett was very pleased with the day " This team showed up today hungry for more. The women's 4x100m, as expected, dropped their school record significantly, with other fabulous sprint performances from
Braxton Claridy, coming away with 1 and almost 2 school records. But the greatest show of the meet, for me, was watching
Mark Tiersma command the start of the 5k and hang on to finish 3rd in a massive PR and #2 all-time for evergreen!!"
The Geoducks will return to action next Friday, March 15
th and 16
th at the Pacific Lutheran University Open in Tacoma, where they will showcase their men and women's throwers. "Today was definitely really special. To see so many personal bests, all-time list, records, and even better seeing everyone having fun as one Geoduck family… It really made my day. Look out for our throwers next week!" ! stated Head Coach
Joel Pearson.
