Scheuerell Qualifies for NAIA Nationals

The Evergreen State College Track & Field programs had athletes compete at two different venues on Sunday, April 28th, with meets at the USATF Oregon Association 5K Race Walk Championship, held at Rex Putnam High School, and the Olympia Hammer Series, held on campus at The Evergreen State College.

Junior River Scheuerell won the Men's 5,000 Meter Racewalk at the Oregon Association meet in epic fashion! His performance of 26.49.77 not only smashed the Geoduck school record (Larry Smith, 30:26.20, 1985), but also qualified for the NAIA Outdoor National Track & Field Championships! River will join Alauna Carstens from May 22 – 24 at the National Championships held at Indian Wesleyan University in Marian, Indiana.

"It's fantastic to have River qualify for nationals in his first ever race! He has only been race walking since the end of cross country, so to see him come through and qualify this past weekend is phenomenal," said Assistant Coach Katie Burnett.

Freshman Claire Ryan placed 2nd at the hammer meet held on our own Evergreen State campus with a throw of 39.85 meters. Claire's performance is not only her personal best, and the 3rd best mark in school history, but also qualifies her for the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships. Assistant Coach Brittany Hinchcliffe was very pleased! "Perseverance pays off! Claire had been chasing that mark since the beginning of the season and it's great to see her throw her potential. Conference qualifier is just the beginning!"

"What an epic weekend to be a Geoduck! From Oregon State, to Portland, to a meet on our own campus… Geoduck athletes performed amazing!" Stated Head Coach Joel Pearson. "What a perfect way to head into post season!"

The Geoducks return to Track & Field at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships on May 10th, and 11th, held at Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls, Oregon at their Moehl Stadium
