Wind-Aided Goal Beats Evergreen in OT

Madison Early (9)
Box Score GREAT FALLS, Mont. – An upset bid by the Evergreen women's soccer team ended in an overtime loss Friday afternoon as the host University of Providence Argos scored the match-winning goal to take a 2-1 victory in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.

Following an Evergreen foul, Sydney Knieriem found the right side of the net to give the Argos (6-6-0 overall, 5-3-0 CCC) the win over the Geoducks (0-10-2, 0-7-1).

It was an outstanding effort by the Geoducks, who continue to play hard despite a roster depleted by a rash of injuries. In fact, the visitors looked to be on the verge of getting a result for their effort, only to see Knieriem win it for the hosts.

As has been the case for much of the season, Providence's good fortune came on a stroke of bad luck for the Geoducks. Knieriem lined up to take the free kick in very windy conditions, and the wind blew the ball at an extreme angle into the near corner.

It took Providence just 26 seconds to get on the board, Eme McLaughlin taking a pass from Knieriem and beating Evergreen keeper Emily Sorenson.

The early deficit didn't daunt the Geoducks, however, and they forced a pair of first half saves from Providence keeper Dakota Neumann before tying it early in the second half.

Evergreen broke a four-match scoring drought at 56:09 when Madison Early took a 35-yard free kick, driving the shot over the keeper and into the upper left corner of the goal. Over the next eight minutes the Geoducks had two shots saved by Neumann and another one blocked by the defense. They had three more cracks at goal inside the final 3 1/2 minutes but couldn't get the match winner.

The overtime period belonged to Providence, which got off five shots – including a shot by Knieriem that hit the crossbar – before she tallied the winner. The Argos finished with a 21-10 advantage in shots, though the Geoducks had the edge in corner kicks, 3-1.

Sorenson finished with seven saves for Evergreen while Neumann was credited with four for the Argos.

The Geoducks return to conference action tomorrow when they play the Carroll College Saints in Helena, Mont.
