Izabelle Trefts (Sr.) from The Evergreen State College women's track and field team set the NAIA indoor national record in the 3,000-meter race walk in a women's only race while taking first place at the Corban Indoor/Outdoor meet on Friday, Feb. 7. The national record time for Trefts was 13:22.64.
In addition to setting the national record, Trefts improved on her qualifying time for the 2026 NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Her previous "A" qualifying time and Evergreen school record was 13:33.27 at the Concordia University Polar Dog Invite on Jan. 23 in Seward, Nebraska.
The previous NAIA women's indoor national record in the 3,000-meter race walk was set by Heather Durrant from University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) with a time of 13:23.29 at the 2024 NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 1, 2024.
"What a great race by Izabelle!" Evergreen Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach
Joel Pearson said. "To be the best ever to do something, in any event or category, is truly something special! Even better, her response to her performance has been to remain driven and continue working hard. I am so proud of her! What an epic day to be a Geoduck!"
"Izzy has pushed through to achieve an incredible mark for a college athlete," Evergreen Assistant Cross Country and Track and Field Coach
Katie Burnett noted. "The drive is there for her to continue to do amazing things in this sport and leave her mark. We are so proud of her."
Earlier this week, Trefts was chosen as the Cascade Collegiate Conference McDonald's Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, presented by Urban Edge Network for her efforts at the Corban Indoor/Outdoor on Feb. 7 and the Portland Indoor #2 on Feb. 8. It was the second time this season that Trefts has received the CCC McDonald's Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week honor. She also claimed the award on Jan. 26.
Trefts, from Milford, Maine, is the defending NAIA 3,000-meter indoor race walk champion. In addition, she earned second place in the 5,000-meter race walk at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships last season. This year, she currently tops the NAIA performance list in the event.
During her college career, Trefts has a pair of NAIA indoor championships in the 3,000-meter race walk. In addition to winning last year's title for Evergreen, she also won the race walk at the 2023 NAIA Indoor Championships while attending Columbia College in South Carolina before transferring to Evergreen.
The Geoducks will compete at the Whitworth Indoor Invitational on Friday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14 at The Podium in Spokane, Washington. The meet will be hosted by Whitworth University.
