One of the most dynamic soccer players ever to take the field for The Evergreen State College, Joe Gjertsen capped off his senior season in 2004 by earning Cascade Collegiate Conference Player of the Year, All-Region Player of the Year and All-America Third Team recognition. He also earned all-tournament honors in helping the Geoducks to the 2004 NAIA national tournament quarterfinal round.
Gjertsen, a forward, garnered All-Cascade Collegiate Conference First Team selection in both 2003 and 2004, the only seasons he played at Evergreen. He was a two-time region player of the week, three-time conference player of the week and two-time Evergreen co-athlete of the week.Â
A 2005 Evergreen graduate, Gjertsen holds the Evergreen men's soccer single-match records of five goals and 11 points. His name appears seven times on the single-match goals list and three times in the single-match points list. The Geoducks compiled a combined 22-15-1 record during his two seasons in the program.
Following his collegiate career, Gjertsen played Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes, Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps. As of 2016, he continues to play professional indoor soccer for the Tacoma Stars.
