Steve House is a world renown alpinist best known for the first successful rapid alpine-style ascent of the Central Pillar of the Rupal Face on Nepal's Nanga Parbat, accomplished Sept. 1-8, 2005. Nanga Parbat is the ninth highest mountain in the world at 8,126 meters (26,660 feet) above sea level. This climb earned him and partner Vince Anderson the Piolet d'Or, a coveted international award presented for the most outstanding alpine-style climb of the year. House also received the People's Choice Award for the 14th Piolet d'Or for a first ascent of the Southwest Face route on K7 in Pakistan.
In addition to those award-winning alpine assaults, House has accomplished an impressive list of first ascents and new routes in Alaska, the Canadian Rockies, the Alps and the Karakoram (a mountain range spanning the borders of Pakistan, India and China). A 1995 graduate of The Evergreen State College, House has authored three books, continues to climb and work as a mountain guide, and is the co-founder and co-operator of a non-profit organization that mentors young climbers to safely become better alpinists.
