Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – The Evergreen State College won the first two sets but couldn't put away the host Multnomah and ended up dropping a five-set Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball decision to the Lions on Friday night in Lytle Gym.
Set scores were 22-25, 18-25, 32-30, 25-20, 15-12.
Despite early offensive struggles in which they combined for just 15 kills, the Geoducks (5-21 overall, 4-15 CCC) still took the first two sets. Most of that was due to outstanding defensive play as the visitors managed 17 digs and two team blocks in the opening set and five team blocks in the second set. Freshman middle blocker
Bethanie Nelson had two solo blocks and one block assist and senior middle
Jorden Porter had four total block assists through the first two sets.
The Geoducks continued their great blocking with five more in the third set, including a pair of solos by
Renita Gray, but the Lions ended up changing the momentum with the drawn-out 32-30 victory. Miranda Halverson, who had a negative attack percentage through the opening two sets, put down eight kills to turn the tide. The third set alone featured 14 ties and seven lead changes.
After hitting .260 in the third set, Multnomah closed out Evergreen by hitting .226 in the fourth set and .389 in the deciding fifth set.
Porter led the Geoducks with 14 kills, followed by
Chloee Hunt and Natalie Turner with 12 each.
Megan Breckenridge was all over the court with a match-best 28 digs.
Halverson posted 19 kills for Multnomah, which had four players finish with double-figure kills.
Evergreen concludes its season at 5 p.m. tomorrow against Warner Pacific.
