OLYMPIA, Wash. –
Sage Scheuerell (Sr., F) from The Evergreen State College men's soccer team is the Evergreen Featured Athlete of the Week for September 11, 2025. Prior to arriving at Evergreen, Scheuerell attended Olympia Regional Learning Academy.
During the 2024 season, Scheuerell scored three goals and three assists while playing in 15 games with four starts. He also played in 15 games in 2023 and in 12 games in 2022. He has started both games for Evergreen so far this season and has registered one goal.
Scheuerell was named Academic All-Cascade Collegiate Conference in 2023 and 2024. He was chosen Academic All-District in 2024 by the College Sports Communicators.
As a forward, it's important that Scheuerell control the ball, work with other attacking players, and help create scoring chances. He brings some exceptional skills to the soccer field.
"My top strengths as a forward are my pace, physicality, and ability on the ball," Scheuerell said. "I can stretch the opponent's backline and press their defenders, forcing them to make hard decisions. I can drive at defenders with the ball and create chances for my teammates and for myself."
It means a lot to Scheuerell to impact the Evergreen offense. "Goals change games," he noted. "A single goal can flip a game on its head." Last year, he scored two goals and one assist in the Geoducks' 8-0 victory over Walla Walla.
Being a member of the team also is meaningful for Scheuerell away from the field.

"I enjoy and treasure the friendship and personal connections I have with my teammates," Scheuerell noted. "Being part of a group and working towards a goal bigger than yourself is immensely fulfilling. Competing in training and in matches with his group is a privilege that has gone by all too quickly."
While in high school, a connection with his club soccer coach led to Scheuerell arriving at Evergreen. He also chose Evergreen for the opportunity to earn a degree with an emphasis in Environmental Biology and Chemistry.
"
Steve Schmidt, Evergreen's head coach, was my club soccer coach in high school," Scheuerell explained. "He offered me a spot on the team, enabling me to pursue my passion for playing soccer through my time in college."
In the classroom, Scheuerell said that he "chose Evergreen because of its rich offerings in the biological sciences and other related fields. I knew that I was interested in earning a degree I the STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). Before committing, I was aware that the faculty-to-student radio was extremely good and that here would be a plethora of opportunities to connect directly with my professors."
"I have taken programs on microbiology, organic, chemistry, molecular biology, and biochemistry to name a few," Scheuerell commented. "This fall quarter, I will be taking upper division math, specifically Differential Equations and Multivariable and Vector Calculus. Once I graduate, my plan is to work in a STEM-related field until I know exactly what I want to do for graduate school."
Away from soccer and the classroom, Scheuerell is a student worker with The Outdoor Program (TOP) at Evergreen. He also participates in additional outdoor activities.
"Some of what (being a student worker in TOP) entails is running the climbing gym in the Costantino Recreation Center (CRC), managing the outdoor gear rental center, and planning events and trips into the wilderness," Scheuerell noted. "I have been an avid skier since the age of four and enjoy traversing the backcountry and frontcountry alike. In the summer months I love to go backpacking and hiking whether in the Pacific Northwest or elsewhere (he was in Peru in July of 2025)."
